2012-13 WCT League Season is Now Underway

by James Hoskin, Director of Organized Play

4th October 2012

A new season of the WCT Leagues began on Monday, and we're excited to reveal the 2012-13 league promos. As with last year, league events can be First Edition, Second Edition or Tribbles this season; so each game gets a league promo:

As you can see, all three league promos feature Hajur. He appeared in the Voyager episode Tsunkatse, the same episode from which last year's league promos, The Pendari Champion, came from too.

These three new promos are exclusive to league events until the end of the 2012-13 season. This means that the only way to get your hands on one of these promos will be to participate in a 2012-13 league event, and the only place to play with one will be in a 2012-13 league event. These promos will become printable and playable in all tournaments in July 2013.

In an effort to reduce the workload for shipping manager Dan Hamman and his warehouse elves/minions/collective, the Continuing Committee will not be producing WCT league prize kits this season. Instead, each League Director will be supplied with PDFs of the league promos that they can print and distribute themselves. (League Directors should expect to receive these PDFs via private message within the next 24 hours. If you are expecting to receive them but don't by Friday 5th October, please contact me directly.)

What are WCT Leagues?

WCT Leagues are designed to provide continuous play during the off-championship months of October through March. They are meant to be fun and to encourage diverse deck design.

League events are run exactly like regular tournaments. The only difference: they also have their own scoring system. League points are awarded based on where you finish at a tournament, as well as how many players participated at that tournament. League directors also have the option of using a number of bonus point schemes, awarding bonus points for things like using a different headquarters in each event and being the first player in a league to complete a particular mission.

This year, the league season is split into three parts: The first half comprises four events held during October and November. The second half comprises four events held during December and January, and the playoffs comprise four events held during February and March. The top finishing players in the first half join the top finishing players in the second half to participate in the playoffs, where the champion of the league is determined.

More information on WCT leagues can be found in Section 11 of the Organized Play Guide (PDF), and questions can be asked in the WCT Leagues forum.

How can you get a league promo?

If you're interested in participating in a WCT league, winning the exclusive promos shown above and earning WCT League specific achievements, the list of this season's leagues (including a league played online via LackeyCCG) can be found in the league hub. If you can't find a league close to you, why not ask your local tournament organizer to apply? If you don't have a local tournament organizer, but you do have at least three friends to play with, why not apply yourself? Please see this article for more information on the (extremely short) application process.

Applications to run a 2012-13 WCT League are still being accepted for the next two weeks.
