EUCC Side Event - Chairman's Challenge X

by Charlie Plaine, Chairman

10th July 2013

Once again, we're proud to offer a new Chairman's Challenge at the request of the European Continental Championship event planners. This year's challenge will take place on Sunday, July 21st as  one of that weekend's Second Edition side events.

Why's it called a Chairman's Challenge? Because I, the Chairman of The Continuing Committee, must approve all of these events. And also because I'm going to issue you a challenge; if you accept, not only will you have fun, but you'll earn extra recognition, a special forum badge, and the accolades of your peers. It's time to shake things up and to make you look at old cards in a new light.

Here is the challenge for the 2013 European Continental Championship weekend, a.k.a. Chairman's Challenge X:

Build, play, and win with a deck containing no duplicate cards.

We call this challenge "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination (IDIC)," which is by no coincidence the name of the achievement you can earn by playing this deck! It's not as easy as you might think to build a deck that doesn't repeat any cards or dilemmas. You can't use back up copies of key personnel or events, or three (3) copies of your favorite dilemma. But you might just be able to modify one of your decks to qualify if you are headed to the European Continental Championships anyway!

As with all Chairman's Challenge events, participation in the challenge is optional. But if you do build and play with a qualifying deck, you'll be eligible for the extra honors it conveys. And it's supposed to be challenge - to test yourself and see if you can rise above and meet it head on.

If you're looking for a deck that might help you qualify, here are a few suggestions:

TOSing all over the place
Will Hoskin (Gumbo) played this deck on 3 June 2013, and it might earn you a total of nine (9) achievements! It's a small deck that might just help you be a Chairman's Challenge winner! Read Will's tournament report for details.

Nine(r) Achievements
You can earn a different (if slightly overlapping) set of nine (9) achievements with this DS9 deck by Johannes Klarhauser (Kaiser) played last October.

Mirror Section 31 - Goateed Dan & Rogue! 2.0
Finally, if you're willing to go back to the tail end of 2011, you can play the original IDIC deck by Joel Bray (JoelBray). This bare-minimum size mirror Starfleet deck will also get you nine (9) achievements, but you might want to update it some to account for a year and half worth of new cards.

Good luck to everyone competing in the European Continentals, and especially to anyone who takes up the challenge of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination. Grab some of your "almost included" cards and give them a shot instead of extra copies of others!
