Make it So Results

by Charlie Plaine, Make it So Host

19th May 2014

Today, the long journey of Make it So 2013 comes to an end as we declare the winner. After months of work, we are proud to welcome James Monsebroten (Orbin) as the winner of Make it So, and the Next First Edition Assistant Designer! Please join myself and all of the judges in congradulating James and welcoming him to the design team. James will be starting work shortly, as there's no rest for members of the design team!

Before we look at the detailed results, we want to also congradulate Adam Hegarty (Chewie) on a fine showing in the final challenge. The scores were very close and Adam worked as hard as James on his final submission. James, Adam, and all of the contestants throughout Make it So are very deserving of praise and thanks. I am confident we will see many of them in First Edition's future.

Team Defiant

Stephen G. (Zef'no)
Daniel Matteson (OKCoyote)

Team Enterprise

Sean O'Reilly (Jono)

Let's take a look at the final scores:

Score Component Maximum Points Team Defiant Team Enterprise
Meeting Challenge Requirements 20 20 19
Individual Card Scores 150 109.20 108.13
Overall Challenge Score 50 35.19 36.11

Final Team Evaluations 10 10 10
Team Phase Evaluations 10 10 8
Process Evaluation 10 10 9
Total 300 233.00 229.78

The details about the scores, comments from the judges and the public, are available here, and will remain so on the Make it So page. The detailed results contains all of the individual card scores as well as comments. I wanted to take a few moments to explain some of the other scoring as seen above.

Meeting Challenge Requirements - The only point deduction that happened in this category was that of a single point (5%) against Team Enterprise for their use of a Kazon infiltration icon. The judges felt that this was not an egregious violation of the rules as it was an extrapolation of an existing icon, as easy for one to infer its mechanical function. However, it was technically a new icon and thus a small penalty was leveraged in this category (and not against the card itself.)

Final Team Evaluations - Yours truly, as the host, had intended to have the final team members evaluate the finalists and base this score upon those evaluations. I failed to do so, and thus just gave full points to each team in this category.

Team Phase Evaluations - During the team challenges, contestants were each asked to submit evaluations of their team mates. In order to determine the score in the final challenge based on these evaluations, each "negative" evaluation resulted in a penalty of -1.5 points. Meanwhile, a "neutral" evaluation resulted in a penalty of -0.5 points.

Process Evaluation - As the Host of Make it So, I have watched each team's private forum and observed the teams processes and procedures. Using my judgement, as the criteria outlined in articles, I evaluated the efficiency of the process used by each team. I deducted one point from Team Enterprise because they did not appear to document their research, which is an important step.

The team phase evaluation and process evaluation scores were calculated before voting was closed.

And thus we have come to the end of Make it So 2013. We want to thank all of the members of the community that took the time to vote and comment on the cards submitted over the course of the competition. Thank you for helping us to shape the future of First Edition. We are eager to hear any and all feedback from contestants, judges, and members of the community on what you liked and disliked about the competition. Please feel free to join the discussions on the Make it So forum. We do not know when (or if) Make it So will return, but any and all feedback provided on this iteration of the competition will help in developing future iterations.

It's been a long few months, but James - and the rest of the design team - have a lot of work ahead! It's empowering, encouraging, and inspiring to see so much passion from the community, and it's a big part of the reason why we all do what we do. It's time to get to work and make more, great First Edition - thank you for participating, and thank you for reading.
