Helping the Continuing Committee-Your Suggestions?

by Tony Gammell, Lead Market Developer

6th July 2008

I'm sure everyone remembers the day well. December 5, 2007. I had just returned from a great game of soccer with a few friends, and with holidays fast approaching, I was in great spirits. As a Star Trek CCG player for close to twelve years, it was tough to read the announcement on the Decipher boards that evening. Star Trek CCG was ending. For many players, including myself, the announcement had been expected for some time, but it still came as a shock. A chapter in my life was closing, and the realization that I had attended my final major Star Trek tournament was hard to take.

Six months on, and Star Trek CCG is probably stronger than it has been in quite some time. On that dark day in December, very few people could have foreseen that! Thanks to some hard work by both The Continuing Committee and all the player groups around the world, the future of the game is looking very bright. We already have a new expansion, we are eagerly awaiting another, and the foundations for many more have already been laid. The Organized Play system is running smoothly, and we are all enjoying the new tournament software and ranking system.

In an ideal world, all this work could be carried out without any cost to The Continuing Committee, but unfortunately, as we head towards our first year in operation, reality must rear its ugly head... running costs take their toll.

We need help. It is as simple as that. Without a steady flow of donations, it will be hard for The Continuing Committee to keep going. There are many 'little' costs that accumulate, and with the majority of previous donations being used to move the website to a better server, we are finding it difficult to keep things running smoothly. With this in mind, there are a number of ways for players to assist!

As a group, we are fortunate that we do not have to spend money on new sets anymore. We can simply download them for free, thus saving hundreds of dollars every year. Why not donate a fraction of this money to The Continuing Committee? If everyone that downloads The Undiscovered Country (and each subsequent set) could donate just $10, it would make an unbelievable difference to what The Continuing Committee can achieve in the future. If you feel like donating less or more than that figure, then feel free! Every donation we receive is important!

When the new tournament software was being developed, The Continuing Committee listened to the concerns of the players. One such concern was the $1 fee for each tournament. Even though we now have a tournament software system that is widely regarded as superior in every way to its predecessor, we have listened to the players and decided to drop the $1 fee. Instead, I would ask tournament directors to consider running donation drive events. Perhaps once every quarter, organize a special tournament, collect $1 from your players at the end of a tournament and send it to The Continuing Committee. Again, this will make a massive difference!

In addition to donating money, a great way to help The Continuing Committee is to spread the word of our existence. Even though we have amassed over 400 members in the last six months, there are still literally thousands of players and collectors who do not know about the website or what we are trying to achieve. Whether they are local players or people with whom you traded in the past over the internet, please let them know and encourage them to sign up. The more members we have, the stronger the game will become!
