The Quietest GenCon Ever

by Michael Van Breemen, North American OP Coordinator

11th July 2016

Normally you would've been inundated with article after article about all of the events at GenCon this year, whether it's Worlds or Continentals as it's been for many years... but this is not a typical year. This year, there's been a couple of changes (of which only one of them was expected) which has lead to this being a very quiet GenCon this year. First, it was decided to have a Masters at GenCon this year and give Continentals to Orlando which, by all accounts, was a rousing success for all of the attendees.

However, what wasn't expected was the issues that we've had in getting events at GenCon. The events were submitted before the first deadline so that they would appear in the catalog like we've done for years... but this time we were declined without explanation. When we emailed back to find out why, we didn't hear a response back for months which was equally atypical. We've never had these kinds of problems with GenCon before and weren't expecting this at all. I didn't feel right in doing any kind of publicity for GenCon events if we didn't know where it was going to be held; whether it was going to be in a meeting room, in one of the connecting hotels, or somewhere else. So, we've been on a kind of holding pattern until we heard from GenCon.

Just this week, we've received word from GenCon that they wanted to confirm some of the information that we've provided them and that they will find space for us. We're just waiting confirmation on where exactly we're being placed and then that's it. Until then, here's a listing on TrekCC for the events that are being held at GenCon this year -

Schedule

Game August 4th August 5th August 6th August 7th
First Edition

10 am - Team Tournament  - Players form teams of 3 and, in this event, teammates will never play against each other. The team with the highest combined victory point total wins, otherwise it's like any other OTF constructed tournament. Click Here to Register.

4 pm - OTF Block Sealed  - Each player will be given a different sealed starter based on a different Reactor Core card along with four random packs from all of the block sets. Click Here to Register.

10 am - Trek Masters (1E) - Five rounds of OTF constructed, top 8 receive Masters foils. Click Here to Register.

6 pm - OTSD Sealed (1E) - Open card pool, play the cards as written and go nuts. Click Here to Register.

10 am - Block Constructed - All the cards for the current block rotation are fair game to make your decks with. Click Here to Register.

4 pm - Open Constructed  - From having a limited pile of cards to all the cards in the game, build your deck accordingly. Click Here to Register.

10 am - Cool Tournament - A staple on the 1E side, this is all about being cool and doing cool things rather than necessarily winning. This year we're introducing a cool tournament for the 2E side as well.  Click Here to Register.

Second Edition

10 am - Infinite Diversity Draft (2E) - We're going to be using the new Infinite Diversity cards and format. If you're going to take part in this you can use your own fixed Infinite Diversity cards if you want and please bring backing cards (I'm going to have some backing cards but I can't promise that I'll have enough backing cards for everyone.) Click Here to Register.

4 pm - Team Tournament (2E) - Players form teams of 3 and in this event, teammates will never play against each other. The team with the highest combined victory point total wins, otherwise it's like any other constructed tournament. Click Here to Register.
