Vladimir Vrbata is the new Star Trek CCG European Champion!

by Tony Gammell, Lead Market Developer

2nd August 2008

After a highly competitive two-day event in Berlin, Germany, Vladimir Vrbata of the Czech Republic became the Star Trek CCG European Champion for 2008. Going undefeated on day one with an impressive 6-1-0 record, he overcame four tough opponents on day two to ensure that the title of Star Trek CCG European Champion returned to the Czech Republic for a second year.

In other tournaments, UK player James Hoskin defeated a field of seven players in a highly-entertaining Dangerous Missions draft held on Friday night. Will Hoskin came in second, with Tobias Rausmann achieving third place.

On Saturday morning, a total of 34 players attended day one and competed over seven rounds for a place in the Final 16. In the end, it was Vladimir Vrbata (Borg) who won day one, followed closely by Johannes Klarhauser (Borg) and Jirka Paska (The Next Generation).

The second annual European Beiermeister was held on Saturday night and eleven brave warriors risked their livers, their brain cells and even their day two positions to become the Biermeister. Will Hoskin swept aside the other ten players in attendance with a 3-0 (and more impressively 3.6l of beer) to take home the title. Derek Barry of Ireland came second with 2.4l of beer.

On day two, a number of the higher seeds fell early and many felt that we could have an upset on our hands. But the combination of top player and top Borg decks could not be undone, and Vladimir Vrbata defeated Johannes Klarhauser in the final.

On the same day, we had the honor of running the very first Chairman's Challenge event, and 22 players battled it out over five rounds to become its very first champion. German National Champion Tobias Rausmann (Borg) of Germany won the tournament with a highly-impressive 5-0 record. Tony Gammell of Ireland (The Next Generation) was second.

Everyone had a great time and are already looking forward to next year's event!
