First Edition CRD, OTF Ban List Updated

by Nick Fancher, First Edition Rules Master

6th September 2010

The First Edition blitz keeps rolling on with the continuation of regular updates to the 1E rules documents. Updates will be released the first Monday of every month, as needed (same day as the 2E updates). With the World Championships taking place in Germany this month, we have three erratum and two new rulings added to the CRD, thirteen cards added to the OTF Ban List, and an updated Hi-Res Errata File.

So what’s new in the CRD?

Empok Nor – This update makes it so that a dilemma can be Empok Nor related if Empok is listed in the gametext, instead of just the lore. So the AI version of Friendly Fire, as well as any others that might appear in the future, can still work under your opponent’s Empok Nor.

Clone Machine – Dual personnel cards are no longer valid targets for this card. No more cloning Data because you can clone Picard.

Holodeck Door – This erratum limits this card to one per ship, closing a loophole where a player would seed 10 of these cards and return them to hand, downloading all the holograms they would ever need.

Kazon Warship – This erratum only allows smaller Kazon ships to be carried aboard. No more dropping a Hirogen fleet using a Kazon carrier.

Starfleet Phaser Pistol – This card now has the 22nd century icon, so it can work as part of the Starfleet era.

In addition to these erratum (which apply to all formats), there are a number of additions to the Official Tournament Format ban list. Read more to find out what's new in the OTF Ban List, and why are these cards banned.

Harrad-Sar (Slave of the Situation) – Downloading 3 personnel by playing another is too much. Especially with how easy it is to remove a personnel from play and play them again later.

Navaar (Experienced Gift) – The ability to gain any skill at any time during a mission attempt is too much, especially with a low cost and no restriction on how many times you can use it.

D'Nesh (Manipulative Gift) - The ability to add to attributes at any time during a mission attempt is too much, especially with a low cost and no restriction on how many times you can use it.

Vash (Treasure Hunter) – Drawing a card and retrieving a card when you play Vash is a bit much.

Neras (Slave Girl) – Drawing cards for playing this personnel is too much.

Organ Theft – The ability to download any personnel is too strong, especially with the low requirements of this card.

Ancestral Vision – This draw engine is proving to be a little too good when combined with general use draw mechanics. It is a clear advantage to the [DQ] player.

War Council – A [NA] free play source is nice, but this is proving to be too general use and powerful when combined with other free play sources.

Delta Quadrant Spatial Scission – Getting a second copy of a powerful unique personnel in play is too much.

Subspace Schism – Discard decks just love this card. Opponents getting hit with multiple of these cards are not as happy.

Memory Wipe – This card is used in a lockout deck where a player’s cards all become [NA], preventing that player from solving his or her missions.

Clone Machine – Having unrestricted copies of unique personnel in play creates too many rules issues. This needs to be thought out a little more. And yes, the rules committee appreciates the irony of banning a card the same day we make a ruling on it. But remember, the ban list only applies to OTF Events; the CRD applies to all 1E formats.

Devidian Door – Calling up a free personnel where you need them when you need them is powerful, especially when you can do it without having the card in your hand.

The 1E Rules Committee would like to give a shout out to Johnny Holeva, Jörn Engström, and the rest of our graphic design team for the great job they did on the new High Resolution Errata file. Check it out here, it is well worth the download time!

Both the new CRD as well as the updated OTF Ban List take effect immediately, and are available for download from the front page of The Continuing Committee's website.
