This year starts with sadness. Many years ago, on Monday night at a game store that has since closed, existed Decipher night. Jeremy was playing DC; Phil and Ben showed up late. My first game of Star Trek CCG was against a man named Sean King Jones. I had to borrow Margret’s Romulan deck, as I had no cards of my own. Sean won.Over the years, I would go on to play many games against Sean at the Game Parlor, local libraries, coffee shops, and tournaments near and far. Sean patiently taught me keywords, species, special icons, and dilemma combos. He showed me his competitive edge and brought me into the Star Trek world. Without Sean King Jones, I may not have come back to Decipher night.
It is with heavy heart that I report that Sean passed away on January 30th of health complications. Sean was an excellent professional graphic designer for The Washington Post and a big fan of all of the science fiction that we all love. While reading old email to write this post, I was surprised how much email I personally have regarding Decipher night, Trek tournaments, deck ideas, movies, and much more. Sean was there the whole time with different decks, fun new board games, and always a smile. I have many fond memories of Star Trek cards, tournaments, after hours parking lot discussions, and board games with Sean. Over the years, our group has fractured due to different life circumstances. But despite distance, time, and careers separating our players; we are all still part of The Game Parlor Decipher Night play group. I am sad to report our group has grown smaller by one.
Rest in Peace, Sean. It was a great pleasure playing with you and we will miss you.
