One of the first decks I ever built and put together myself was just a ton of Klingon ships and a ton of Borg Ships (pre-errata). I never even tried a mission, I just played ships and warriors and sent them down the spaceline hunting Borg. It was that very deck that inspired Mo'Lak, today's Warp Pack: Holiday 2017 spoiler and the Quick Start Deck that goes with him!
Aside from his special skill, Mo'Lak isn't too noteworthy except that he's another Klingon, which is a deck that can always use more personnel. He carries painfully obvious Klingon skills (Leadership and Honor) and OFFICER-classification as well as the standard icons you'd expect. His attributes are pretty plain as well, clocking in at a 6 in each. So his special skill had better be pretty special to justify this card. Here it is:
Points you score from cards do not count towards Writ of Accountability.
Writ is one of those cards that, simply by existing, alters the way decks are built. It's not likely you'll run into someone using this card, so you're probably safe scoring lots of points off your dilemmas... but if someone does bring it, you're wrecked. Mo'Lak lets you bring as many point-bearing dilemmas to the game as you want, because none of them will count against you if an opponent does play Writ. The downside is that, as of this article, there are only two dilemmas that can score you points, Assimilated Vessel and Borg Ship. Assimilated Vessel is one that you have to keep your opponent from destroying, since you'll score the points if it escapes. But the Borg Ship, you can hunt with impunity. So let's see what a deck that does that looks like!
For reports, I'm using Camp Khitomer and https://www.trekcc.org/1e/index.php?cardID=4912Protect the Timeline, so you'll want a healthy dose of personnel. Your ships can report for free to the time location, so load up on them, even if they are weaker. You should be able to get to most of the personnel types needed for the Kurlan Naiskos by the 2nd turn: your mission specialists, support personnel, and downloads from Kronos One get you most of the way there. Getting the artifact should be your first goal; however, if it proves troublesome to do so, switch to just building an armada instead.
In terms of missions, I suggest easy, low point missions. You can get 50 points from the self-seeded cards, if you get all four (40), so doing three 20-pointers will give you enough points. Focus on space missions, where you can red shirt with impunity, get through dilemmas and trigger your self seeds. Then you can leave behind a small ship and solving crew, and seek out glory for the empire.
Let me know what you think of the skeleton and the ideas here. If you use this as an inspiration for your own deck, please post it! We can't wait to see what you guys do with these cards, and if you like these little jumping off points, so let us know! And come back tomorrow for another preview card and another quick start deck - one that has at least seven (7) affiliations in it!
