PART THREE
2010 AC Weekend Day 3: Friday, 2nd of July

Today was again pretty much a non-event in terms of life outside of STCCG. We needed to be in Burwood by 2:30pm for the 3pm 2010 Australian First Edition Continental Championships. I was playing so I needed to make sure my deck was in order and that the event's special guest Judge, Kieren Otton, had all the materials ready to run the event. Good thing I was organised. ;)

The train journey was... interesting. Since we never really gave Matt a humiliating initiation, we thought we'd do the next best thing. I taped a condom and box of lube to Casanova, and we gave it to Matt to carry to Burwood. Our banner carrier. Matt took all the weird looks, laughs, and ridicule very well. Maybe he was used to it?...

Alone, Matt sat, as he proudly held Casanova - he fought to hold back the tears.

There was little fanfare for the return of First Edition to the Continentals scene for the first time since 2005, indeed, the first time multiple states had vied for the title since 2002. It had been a long hiatus, but the game was ready to return with a BANG!

Nine players showed up in total (so four rounds w/ final confrontation). The majority had played First Edition back in the old days. Peter Hill showed up with a deck he'd found a few days before hand, that he built nearly 10 years ago.

The format was the new Official Tournament Format. This was going to be the first championship event in the world to use the new format. Used as a basis to fix a lot of the funky brokenness in the game, there weren't many things left in the game to exploit: Q-bypass, The Sheliak/Q, skill deprivation/lockout, RBM, Wormhole'ing unsuspecting opponent's to Time Locations... ah, just some of the fun little NPE's I used to love to bust out. Now no more.

I didn't have much time to build something spectactular for the event, so like others, I played whatever deck I had laying around. A Vidiian Sodality-Scission deck with War Council, plus a few Voyager skill whores (and of course, a number of UR's just to show off, including The Pendari Champion and a couple of copies of UR Reg Barclay... ;) ). I also ran Emblem-suported MQ Ore Processing for some crazy-ass cycling. I knew that the new First Edition set, Life from Lifelessness, had a lot of anti-DQ tech, but I had points coming out of the wazoo. And plenty of redundancy with my Vidiians to hit Medical Crisis a few times.

The banning of Kevin Uxbridge and Amanda Rogers also worked in my favor, as those Ancestral Vision's and The Traveler: Transcendence's just helped fuel the fire. Unfortunately, Caretaker's Array was on the banned list, so I had to revert back to the old faithful, Spacedoor, to pull a fast (universal) Vidiian ship.

My first game was against Pete Hill. His solid Romulan mission buster was no match for my hard-core drawing and free playing, but he did make up for it with a number classic dilemma combos I hadn't seen in a long time. From the old classic, Scout Encounter/Quantum Singularity Lifeforms, to Emergent Life-form/Nexus/Cytherians. Alien Parasites made light work of my small crews, allowing Pete to set off the above combos with the greatest of ease. Pete had a lot of trouble remembering just what his cards did, so he spent a heck of a long time reading the cards. The game went to time just before I got wiped out by the Nexus. Thankfully I was in the lead, though I think if we had more time, this game could have turned in his favour, depending on how he'd fare against the rest of my dilemmas though. Modified Win to me (25 - -10)

My second game was against Mike Nugent. Mike had a strong Dominion War Efforts/Assign Support Personnel Dominion deck with legions of Jem'Hadar. Lucky for him, he had decided to stock Ketracel-White, but I still busted out White Deprivation on the off-chance I stranded his crew Vorta-less. It takes me two turns to set up OP, in which time I cannot draw cards. Mike used his HQ and Birthing Chambers to churn out Jemmies and hit his four Construct Depot's. Like Pete in the first game, I too had some old favourites under my missions: a couple of combinations involving Pup/Abandon Ship hit hard all who encountered it. Late in the game, Mike's lone ship lost its only Vorta, so it was only a matter of time before his crew self-destructed. He spent a lot of time trying to get another ship and crew out to retrieve his personnel, but not fast enough to see me blast through his dilemma combos and take the game. Full Win to me (115 - 70)

My third game was against Daniel Waller. Hmm... what can I say. More supporting evidence why you should test your deck at least once before bringing it to a Continentals. :P In Round 2 he found out that he was playing Assign Mission Specialists totally wrong, so ended up spending nearly the entire game play-drawing. I almost felt sorry for him, but then again, in a cut-throat competition, you always take your wins where you can get them. Despite this slip-up, he had (more or less) the right idea with his deck. Daniel may be a force to be reckoned with in 2011. Full Win to me (131 - 2).

My forth game was against fellow Perth player, Matthew Townsend. He'd rejected my Klingon Smackdown deck he used to win the 2010 Perth Regionals in favour of a bad-ass Cardie Capture deck he's had in the works for a while now. And for those who remember players screaming "THERE... ARE... FOUR... LIGHTS!" at a Star Trek CCG tournament, you would have loved or hated this deck (depending on whether it was you doing the screaming :P ). Anyhow, with me in the Delta Quadrant, the game degenerated into pretty much a mission-solving race. He also played DWE, which gave him the edge against my skill walls, but in the end his dilemma combos fell flat on their faces, and I had an easy time getting the missions I needed for the win. Full Win to me (110 - 35).

To two players, myself (undefeated at 4/0) and Robert Dawson (3/1) were clear on top.

We played off in an old-school single Final Confrontation which went right to the wire. Robert was playing a MQ speed solver, also with Emblem-suported OP, but at an Alliance Nor instead of Mirror Terok Nor (he was playing Alliance, so he didn't want to risk being out-seeded by a Terran Empire MTN player).

As I mentioned earlier, I usually take the first two turns to set up my Ore Processing, but this time, I was hesitant. I knew that Robert was playing MQ, and if I did outlay those two turns to set it up, Robert could just come over and commandeer it, blowing two turns. So instead I just worked off Traveller and my Chakotay-fueled Ancestral from the get-go. Robert also ran the DWE, which gave him an advantage in personnel numbers and skills. A very close game, as Robert took out all but one of my Biology personnel prior to me hitting Medical Crisis at my planet mission. Luckily, I had one more Danara Pel in my deck, and with her Biology x2, I could throw her and a whole bunch of Vidiians at the mission (and pray). It took the whole game and some meticulously executed moves with several ships/crews, but my last was with Pel and co. back at my planet mission. Full Win to me (130-75).

Nice to be considered a three-time Australian Continental Champion, though disappointed that, despite the promises, I didn't get interviewed by anyone...

:shifty:

Anyhow, while I was basking in the warm glow of championship glory once again, a Second Edition constructed side-event was run and played in parallel. Kenny, living up to all the hype, took out the three-round event undefeated.
