I have a new project - relearning 1E. Give me a hand learning about the different affiliations. It's been 15 years since I played! I figured I might learn a bit by looking at the Top 5 cards from each affiliation and faction. What do you think are the top 5 cards and why?

1) Dual HQ - the WC can be good, but I like the openess of these two!
2) Drone Control Room - Draws, Ships, and DL of people with good end game skills (Im looking at you gareb).
3) Remus, A solid planet mission for 45 geology mission specialist points, plus processing ore!
4) Apnex - Free with hidden fighter, so fast, immune to some anti cloaking tech since it is phased!
5) Cybernetics expertise - you have a DL able cybernetics, Data and Picard is a baller free play with this, as is lore, other androids round out the VIP heavy rotation of the dual HQ.

This creates a great deck with 4 free plays at romulus, close solvable points and lots of draws. Throw in any other NA free engine (Orions, Sona, etc) and you have some really good things moving!

Apnex - built in Phasing Cloak helps it zoom down the spceline
Telak - Instant kickstart to Cybernetic Expertise
Plans of the Tal Shiar - Great multi-use card. Use to attempt missions like Vulcan, which doubles for an extra 10 points for Romulan Reunification. OR bypass the opponents HQ: Defensive Measures to steal a mission.
Investigate Sighting II - Built in Outpost, mission Specialists skills make it a great starting point
Security Sweep - Interrupt, a sneaky chance to get 10 points from the opponent. Combine with a Barber deck for maximum effect

Sticking to TNG, Romulans have it nice with the Hidden Fighter / Apnex / Pi suite. And come on, the Pi even has cheek guards like on some of those Roman helmets (the Romulan Shuttle even more so). It's like it was meant to poke its face into some nebula to see if V'Ger is there.

A couple more honorable mentions would be some downloadable personnel: Ambassador Tomalak with Holodeck Door, and Sisters of Duras with I'm a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer.

How do you get to 45 points? With Process Ore: Mining and AMS I can see 40 points; where do the other 5 come from?
