I have a new project - relearning 1E. Give me a hand learning about the different affiliations. It's been 15 years since I played! I figured I might learn a bit by looking at the Top 5 cards from each affiliation and faction. What do you think are the top 5 [Car] cards and why?

* Central Command, cause back in the days together with Bajorans they were the first to receive a free play via HQ and the Guls are ok

*War Efforts and their support personnel, great skill variety

*Crell Mocett, self-explaining

* universal Nor, downloads and Ore Processing, scanning via Science Lab at Kressari Rendezvous :)

* Captured and Elim, you named it, counceling sessions in a Holding Cell is just pure Trek

  1. Dominion War Efforts: This is basically the Cardassian version of Assign Mission Specialists in that it gives you a very strong incentive to play with what would otherwise be your worst personnel. Unlike AMS, though, this becomes a play engine in its own right. Note that Assign Support Personnel specifies a destination for the download, meaning you can use it to get [MQ] guys, and you can turn that into draws with Study Divergent History.
  2. Central Command: A good selection of free plays at a 35-point homeworld. If you're not playing Central Command, then either you're playing some kind of Treaty concoction or you're playing a risky I Miss This Office deck. Or both.
  3. Legate Damar: Reports free to Central Command, downloadable with Going to the Top or Defend Homeworld. He downloads For Cardassia!, one of the few cards with an exclamation point in the title. That card certainly is exciting because of its great stat boost and potential for bonus points with HQ: Secure Homeworld. Speaking of which, Legate Damar has all the skills you need for HQ: Secure Homeworld.
  4. Oran: Dial-a-skill on an [1E-AU] free report is very handy.
  5. Naprem: One of the two Cardassian ships with a cloaking device, and the only such ship that can report to a Nor. Compare this to ❖ Galor and you'll see you're getting much more bang for your staffing buck. Dukat is the matching commander, and you'll probably be playing him anyway.

Can you give us a full Top 5 with explanations? Remember, I'm trying to learn. :)

I'd reach out to Jason Tang directly. Cardies are his baby here locally.

1.) Assign Support Personnel/Dominion War Efforts: The ability to dial-a-skill once a turn during the order phase is very powerful.

2.) Study Divergent History - Easy to set up with ASP/DWE and gives two extra draws a turn. Super solid.

3.) A Better Alternative - More order phase draws, allows you to use your card play on Ops Downloads to get what you need.

4.) Greater Glory of Cardassia - Let's Cardies be Cardies. Process Ore is fundamental to any Cardassian build and this card protects it. Toss in Overseer Odo who both downloads it and runs it and you're cooking with gas.

5.) Central Command/Ekoor/ [RC] Free Play Engines: If you're going to be drawing all of those cards, you need to be playing cards too. I listed these three together because they complement each other nicely. Guls and Legates + ❖ Security personnel + guys to sites OR the Romulan and Cardassian intelligence communities gives you an array of personnel and skills. Pair the Cardassians with the Bajorans and the free reports just get silly, and yet with the card draws you can feed the beast. Good times.
