Hello!

Longtime reader/lurker, newish poster. I played 1E when it first came out when I was a kid, and have gotten back into the cards since then after finding them available on eBay, at Hills Wholesale, etc. When I was a kid, I mostly played with PAQ-era cards, and now that I'm getting back into it, I still gravitate towards the more basic card types (events, interrupts, etc.) as opposed to the more complicated ones (objectives, interrupts, don't even get me started on tactics!).

I've started trying to get some of my friends into the game. I've been giving them boxes of cards with highlights from all of the sets--mostly commons and uncommons, but rares if I have enough extras. I generally avoid side deck cards and tactics (I don't even know how to use tactics!) because I figure if these things are confusing for me, they'd make new players' heads explode!

I'm pretty low tech, but one of my friends who I've gotten into the game has started printing some virtual cards for me so I've got a few! I really admire what the CC has been doing, and I think it's so cool that after all of these years there are still new cards coming out in the game! I mostly play by traditional rules when I teach friends, so I doubt we'll be competing in any tournaments, but I really enjoy reading the articles and forum discussions here.

Oh, and I have one question to start off with! My friend very much wants to get his Seven of Nine into an Alpha quadrant deck. Can he do that with a Temporal Micro Wormhole or is that just not doable at all?

Yes, this is allowed. Playing a personnel through Temporal Micro-Wormhole overrides the normal quadrant restrictions.
Excellent--thank you so much!

Yes, the rule is that if a card (other than a facility or site) allows a report and provides a destination, then you can play the card to any valid destination, ignoring quadrant restrictions.

Temporal Micro-Wormhole provides a destination ("report a personnel aboard your ship"), and so do Assign Mission Specialists ("to your outpost"), the first function of Defend Homeworld ("you may download there any number..."), and the second function of The Regent's Flagship ("...may report aboard") so they can all ignore quadrant restrictions.

By contrast, the second function of Defend Homeworld ("download a SECURITY"), as well as the first and third functions on The Regent's Flagship ("download Regency 1"; "download a non- [NA] [KCA] leader"), do not provide a destination themselves, so the personnel/ships played with those cards have to report to ordinary valid reporting destinations within their native quadrant.

Does that make sense?

Welcome to the boards and good luck to your group of friends!

I quite often play Seven of Nine in the Alpha Quadrant because her skill set is really good. Also, it it very easy to report her with Quark's Isolinear Rods and Temporal Micro-Wormhole on Turn 2.

But again, you either need to stock huge amounts of these cards in order to draw them early and have dead draws later, use classic Q's Tent or just do TMW and QIR since then you have Seven of Nine out in Turn 2.

Well they are primarily doing PAQ, so Q's Tent is easy enough to pull off. And since this is Seven of Nine we're talking about, she could be being used by any non-Borg affiliation. For all we know this is a Klingon or Romulan player and they may be better off using TMW for Dr. McCoy. So they could Q's Tent Ensign Jameson and then QIR Seven of Nine and switch as appropriate. Yeah it's a lot of resources but if you really want to use a personnel then the extra effort might be worth it...though this does assume using Federation or at least having a Non-Aligned outpost to report Ensign Jameson to.

Thank you, everyone! I hadn't even thought of Quark's Isolinear Rods or Assign Mission Specialists for getting Seven to the Alpha quadrant. I did suggest he use Ensign Jameson instead since she's Alpha quadrant.

We're mostly avoiding having side decks and Q-cards because of how cumbersome it gets, but reading topics here is making me reevaluate Q's Tent at least since that really does seem handy in terms of getting cards out on the table. Spacedoor is also a crazy useful card, which I learned thanks to this board!

Another question: is there any way to stop/destroy The Sheliak dilemma once it's in play? I know you can slow it down via the Time Pod or Temporal Anomaly but is there any way to actually stop it from coming back and destroying your outpost?

This sounds amazing!! I'm a little further north though (LA area) so I'm not sure about the drive down (and back) on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. But I'm incredibly tempted because this sounds like the perfect tournament for me. Do you guys go by the old rulebook or the TCC rules? And if the latter, are they posted at the tournament? Also--and this is such a newbie question, I know--in terms of the virtual cards handed out, are they on sticky paper so you can affix them to other cards? Or do you need the sleeves to hold the virtual card and backer together?

Are there ever tournaments in the LA area or are most of the Risa area ones down in San Diego? I definitely hope to make it to one at some point--this 1E one does sound amazing.

Until now? Mostly San Diego.

But, hey, be the change you want to see in the world: any gathering of four or more players to play Star Trek Cards can be a sanctioned tournament if you just post it on the website at least seven days in advance! (SOURCE: Just ran my first tournament on Saturday.) Nothing stops your L.A. group from doing that.

Almost all sanctioned tournaments these days are run under TCC's OTF rules, but the original rules are called Open Format, there is no ban list in Open (except of course Raise The Stakes, which has always been banned) and it is still an officially sanctioned format. So if you want to run a tournament by the old rulebook, that is 100% an option!

We have folks from time to time that make the trip from LA (and Santa Barbara), but it is admittedly a Drive.

We play by TCC/OTF rules. After a game or two, the OTF rules become very natural. It's just one sheet of rules. LINK:

https://www.trekcc.org/op/otf_rules.pdf

As for virtual cards, most people print out the PDFs, cut them up, and affix to excess cards - then sleeve the cards. Or even just slide the prints in front of excess cards in sleeves.

For this tournament, you'd just need to bring backer cards (80 is more than enough) and sleeves. $5 gets you a printed Starter Deck (that you'd use your backers/sleeves on), at least 3+ Premiere packs, pack Surprises (probably 3), and foil prizes at the end.

Feel free to ask any more questions here or PM me.

Just a note, Assign Mission Specialists will not get Seven into the AQ. That only downloads personnel with one skill and Seven is way beyond that. I get the Q side deck and Q cards in general but Tent is a good one. Things can be stocked in there that might not be generally useful but still could come up (Maybe Assimilate This! to stop Crosis for example) or to stock Seven in there for QIR download instead of taking up space in the draw deck.

I get the MW 80-70....good game.
