Obviously this needs to be a thread for the next several years. Shall we begin?
[Fed] Michael Burnham

[1E-AU] [Stf] SCIENCE [OS]

Foster child of Sarek whose family was killed by Klingons. Graduate of the Vulcan Science Academy. In 2256, as first officer of the Shenzhou during a standoff with the Klingons, she mutined against her captain, Philippa Georgiu, when Georgiu refused to open fire.

[SD] Treachery x2

INT 2 CUN 8 STR 5
Mission specialist!
[Kli] T'Kuvma

[1E-AU] [Cmd] V.I.P. [OS]

Fanatical Klingon nobleman, denied a seat on the High Council, who believed the only way to reunite the twenty-four houses of the Empire was by going to war with the Federation. Styled himself "the Unforgettable," after Kahless. Killed by Michael Burnham.

[SD] Leadership x2 [SD] Honor x2 [SD] ENGINEER
[DL] Romulan Cloaking Device [DL] Any tactic
High council/going to the top freebie. I'm speculating about the origin of that cloak.
[Tac] The Light of Kahless

ATTACK: 0 DEFENSE: 2
If you did not voluntarily initiate this battle (or T'Kuvma aboard your ship firing), all ships within 8 span may immediately move here and join your force.
Hit = [Down] [Flip] Direct Hit = [Down] [Flip] [Flip]

White-out: Ship may not use WEAPONS in battle. Hull: -25%
-1 RANGE -1 SHIELDS

Woo!

(One of my fave easter eggs in the show so far)

[Equ] Chateau Picard
Captain Georgiou kept a stock of vintage wine in
her ready room, made at a family run Vineyard.
If on your ship with it's matching commander, both
are attributes + 2. Discard to make all personnel
present attributes + 1 until end of turn.

I have yet to watch episode two, but a first officer who has at least seven years of experience probably shouldn't be a mission specialist.

It's a quirky persona for now untill we know more about her. Though she did talk the Shenzhou computer out of murdering her

So would that be Diplomacy or Computer Skill? ;)

Don't Feds have a proud tradition of weirdly experienced mission specialists? :)

We could certainly justify Computer Skill, and perhaps even Mindmeld x 1/2. I believe she mentions she's a trained xenoanthrophologist in the desert, so Anthro could work.

But a Fed mission specialist who uses The Art of Diplomacy just seemed more right to me, given her massive and pretty insane betrayal of her ship and her uniform.

Good... there are TWO threads on the forum where I can shit-talk this show!

Treachery x2 is quite appropriate for Burnham. She didn't display too much skill or knowledge of anything in those two episodes, other than a massive penchant for betrayal that makes people like Ensign Ro and Michael Eddington look downright reasonable by comparison. She most certainly doesn't have Diplomacy. Anthro I can see an argument for... except for the fact that she had to make a phone call (and a holographic one at that...) to Vulcan Dad to ask what the Klingons are like and how to deal with them, when that info should be either fairly obvious to a Starfleet anthropologist, or freely available in the ship's computer.

Hey, man, I couched my criticism in enough discussion of this hypothetical Personnel card's skills to count as a valid contribution to the discussion, right?

Apologies, I was just upset that you missed out Computer Skill on Michael, as she out-logic'd the Shenzhou Computer from outright sucking blowing her out into space ;)

So if talking a computer into doing what you want them to do is enough to give you Computer Skill (which I think is a bit of a stretch), then why doesn't any [OS] version of Kirk have Computer Skill? Considering he pulled the same "talking the computer to death" trick on at least two separate occasions.... not to mention his most infamous exploit from his Academy days.

I think I'll make a separate thread in here detailing the fact that Kirk has been turned into a "meme captain" who realistically has more abilities than just Leadership x9000...

Back on topic, I don't think Burnham deserves Cunning 8. Given the way she acts in the show, there is no way she is at smart as the likes of Data and the Borg Queen. If she were that clever, she would have either talked the captain into doing what she wanted or found a much better way of asserting control than "nerve pinch my best friend/mentor and start barking orders suspiciously".

The episodes' depiction of the Klingons, events and Sarek made it clear the she was right --- attacking the Klingons first would have been the best way to handle that conflict and likely prevented a war. These Klingons interpreted "coming in peace" as an attack on their "purity." Anthropology and Honor.

Anybody remember that time Riker picked up Picard's book and knocked him out so he could give the order to open fire on the Fleebnat? And it turned out Riker was totally right and that made everything cool despite his mutiny? That was a fun ep. It was almost like that time Chakotay put Janeway in a sleeper hold and ordered the Away Team to execute all those Trafalmadorians. Turned out he was super right, too. Man, that made Janeway's rational, reasonable attempts at negotiation which is a basic Federation principle look really dumb and short-sighted, didn't it?

Please find me some other instances in Star Trek where assaulting your superior officer and attacking the enemy first is not only the "right" choice, but in fact, the Federation way. Burnham is right only because the story is structured intentionally so as to make her "right". Which is, incidentally, a very common trait of stories featuring Mary Sues. It's also a trait of stories featuring poor writing and characterization.

If they had truly wanted to portray a "first/second contact gone wrong" situation, they should have taken the Babylon 5 route - the humans who first encountered the Minbari misunderstood the charging of their weapons systems (which in Minbari culture is intended to show your full strength to others as a sign of respect for them) as a hostile act and opened fire, thus unintentionally starting the Earth-Minbari War. The Klingons should have been waving their "proud warrior race guy" flag a bit more and done something that could have been misinterpreted as hostile upon first encountering the Shenzou, thus forcing Phillipou/Burnham to act with hostility out of misunderstanding and accidentally starting a war.

This is yet another reason why there is no possible way that this series can lead into TOS: the Klingons from the TOS era onward are not crazy xenophobes who cannot be communicated with at all, much less reasoned with. Thses "Klingons" don't act like any other version of Klingons in any other Trek series, and yet I'm supposed to believe that this is the exact same species that appears in TOS? Don't you remember how jovial Koloth was in Trouble with Tribbles? How reasonable Kang was in "Day of the Dove"? And there's only an (alleged) 10-year difference between these series. There's just no possible way that these same characters hail from the rabidly xenophobic Klingon Empire of STD. Hell, forget being a prequel to TOS, it doesn't even make sense as a sequel to Enterprise! Klingon culture has become far too isolationist and weird in the 100 years since the end of Enterprise. It's just unbelieveable. The sad part is that I could believe this race's extreme xenophobia if they were anyone else other than the Klingons. I've heard within the context of recent world events that isolationism and xenophobia implies cowardice and fear... two traits which are anathema to Klingon culture. If they were the Romulans instead it would actually make perfect sense. If they were a completely new alien race, it would be a believable story. It just does not work for the Klingons.

Back on topic: she couldn't figure out how to deal with the hostile aliens without calling Vulcan Dad, and she mutinies immediately because she can't figure out any other way to accomplish her goal. No Anthro, no Honor.

I believe it was Data who knocked out Picard (and the rest of the crew, and erased their memories) in an attempt to prevent a war.

Also, it was The Doctor who knocked out just about everybody (coincidentally not Janeway) and impersonated them. But that one was an attempt to save Janeway's life.

Conclusion? She's an artificial life-form!

Interestingly, both those examples include not attacking or killing people as the motivation for the characters' actions, in keeping with both the characters' established behavior and morality AND the traditions of Starfleet and the Federation. Burnham assaulted a superior officer and committed mutiny, with the intention of committing violence, and with an uncertain possibility that her actions would produce the desired result.

As for being an artificial lifeform, I'll agree that she certainly doesn't feel like a real person to me... :P
