A game of Tongo, Hue-mon? Mostly printable |
Introduction |
I played one of my updated versions of DS9 tongo that I hadn't played for about 18 months (http://www.trekcc.org/tournament/index.php?mode=viewdeck&deckID=6018). Lots of nice DS9 cards have been released since then -- notably Tongo player Jadzia and Charles Whatley. Essentially you set up the Tongo game and use Adami's order to put an expensive personnel on the top of your deck. I chose OT Kirk as you can use Whatley after some points to place him and Galen (Bejal as backup). Then either try and round the corner with Tongo, or use your extra points liberally with At What Cost?, Whatley, Galen, Melora, and IaMD and solve three. This deck is pretty fun and well powered. |

Round 1 | | Charlie Plaine | FW (+80) |
Charlie was playing the same infiltrator deck he played in Santa Barbara, minus all the infiltration stuff. Unfortunately for him, when he took out all the infiltration stuff, it kept him very short on needed mission skills. Even worse, I went first and drew a great opening hand: Leeta, Jadzia, a Tongo, Adami, and an AWC. Needless to say, I got moving quick. Whatley dropped Kirk and Survey Star System soon fell. I got a Clown: Go Away to land at his space mission, forcing him to pay for a 2nd ship and fly somewhere else. Meanwhile, the "boss mission" (Fulfill Temporal Paradox) fell soon to multi-attempts despite a Temporal Conduit shuffling dilemmas away. FW: 100-10? |

Round 2 | | Rogue Shindler | FW (+40) |
Rogue was playing AU TNG 2 mission win. An AU Guinan on turn 1 meant he was going decently fast. My opening hand was the worst of my 3 games, so I was a little slower than normal. Nevertheless, my Tongo combo soon got moving and a couple AWC? and Whatley latter, I was sitting well ahead of him. Kirk busted him at Survey Star System and with all 3 of my Ferengi Tongo'ing I had the bonus points to win with 2 mission. I had some bad dilemma play at his Wormhole Negotiations. Once I got lucky, the other time I did not. So he was able to hit 55 (he won Tongo once thanks to a rigged OMCSTF) and I got a little nervous. But he wasn't able to hold off my double attempt at the boss mission, and I won FW: 100-55. |

Round 3 | | Matt Kirk | FW (+95) |
Matt was playing TNG Vintner, but was struggling to get moving. Meanwhile, I had a decent opening hand and hit warp speed with two AWC? and Whatley. I soon found out Matt was playing an Overwhelmed pile -- to which VO Sisko said 'uh ugh'. As a result, my two planet missions fell rather easily -- getting me the FW: 100-5. In my games, I was really impressed with how well I was able to solve mission. Usually I struggle with DS9 as they can get picked apart by a number of commonly played dilemmas. The addition of Kirk obviously helps, as in 2 of the 3 games, I only needed to solve two missions to win. Thanks to Whatley and AWC I had 15-20 people out by the end of each game. Any opponent is going to have a difficult time stopping that. In general, my opponent's didn't like how easy it was for me to generate points or for dropping Kirk on them. But really, Bajor/DS9 Gamma Quadrant is a pretty novel deck idea. While the Tongo/Adami combo is well-known, I think I've been one of the few people to pull it off successfully. It is definitely much better now than when I last -- really -- played it 18 months ago. |
