Mirror Starfleet...with Special Guest |
Introduction |
I read tournament reports, and I think "I could do that". Turns out, I find remembering what happened in one game's tricky enough, so imagine what happens when I try to remember five!
Well, no need to imagine - here are the highlights for my Omarion Nebula Regional... |

Round 1 | | Unjustly Banned | ML (-30)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
James drops Athos and then four missions with Integrity based requirements. ‘Should mean big teams’, I think to myself, mentally wringing my hands together as I think about my dilemma pile. Wrong. Turns out to be small teams of Inad(s), Vic, Benbeck and Conor, with the Maquis personnel in there to add Commander keywords to ships, and to fly those Non-Aligned hippies about the place.
James manages to complete Farpoint with little trouble, and, as he’s completed a mission with Acquistion, can now play his Flute, and starts playing and recycling OTA and Stalling. Pretty soon my personnel are leaving play, then being shuffled away.
Luckily, I manage to pull off one mission, and, on James’ final turn, with two missions under his belt, he has to complete two missions for a full win. IIRC, on his first attempt at his third mission (Alien Probe) a Healing Hands stops his Rebecca Sullivan, taking away his essential Biology.
Modified Win for James.

Danny was playing Mirror Starfleet. I chuckled to myself at the thought that his empty-hand strategy made redundant my plan to keep his hand empty. Besides a couple of warmup games the night before, I hadn't played this deck in six years. I was rusty. I made it through my first mission attempt and played the Flute to begin my shenanigans. Unfortunately, I then had to complete a space mission. Danny's Reflections dilemma was shutting me down each time. One third of my deck was events or interrupts, and he had at least six mirror personnel in play each time he used the dilemma. I eventually completed the mission, but time was very close to being up at that point. I knew I couldn't score enough points to win the game with Deploy the Fleet, so I was left having to try and complete two missions on my final turn. I completed one, but in the process lost one of the skills I needed for my fourth mission.

Round 2 | | William Hoskin | FL (-65)View opponent's ReportView original Report |
Although I can’t remember the turn-for-turn play of this game, there are a few key moments that stick in my mind (and hopefully, the last one, will help my game in the future).
To start with, Will’s first attempt was at Escape Gulag – “What, so people have stopped playing Necessary Execution now?” I thought. A quick mental run-through of my dilemma pile shows that I’m not. Aah.
Secondly, during Will’s attempt at Intercept Renegade, he tries to play a Comfort Women to gain a skill to pass a dilemma. I Lustful Distraction it. He throws Mila in front of the Distraction, so I follow-up with a second LD. Will then Navaar’s an event to gain the required skill, overcomes, then moves on to mission requirements. Turns out, taking out Mila took out one of the two Intelligence required. Mission attempt ends.
And lastly, turns out Maglock doesn’t work against particularly well against Cardassians. I admit Officer wasn’t something I was keeping track of, but I realise I should’ve been. Now, after the event, I can see his decklist and spy the 17 instances of it he has. Might have to print off some Personal Duties.
Full Win for Will.

After a good opening hand I get six cardasians out and play Evek capturing Hoshi Sato, captain's woman and start to look for a ship. I get Navaar and Garak out so skill cheating is all up and running and Danny struggles to stop me at the first planet mission. Danny plays rescue captives and I wonder if everyone is running it today. I try my luck by using Exceed Engine Output to get to Intercept Renegade, Danny plays Reflections and has eleven AU cards inplay and I only reveal one event and no interupts Danny can't stop enough skills and I complete the space mission. On his Turn Danny completes his mission and moves on to the second one I stop him with two dilemmas. On my next turn I play Enabran Tain drawing 7 (including the event revealed earlier which was Labor Camp)after discarding two people from hand I play Labor camp and have an ensnared in hand for next turn. I go and attempt my third mission (where I played the Labor Camp) and Danny was unable to stop me with Central Command getting past a few stops and Navaar getting a couple of skills I complete for the win.

Round 3 | | Stuart Motley | FL (-100) |
In my defence, I barely had enough time to remember stuff that happened in this game as it was over so quickly. A full-price Ezri at the start, followed up by three cheap, differently-specied Fed Niner personnel meant that I got (Promenade) Schooled. Jaresh-Inyo then made an appearance and dropped Worf, Bashir and O’Brien off at the pool. Another trip to class, then Whatley came out and brought Data and Kirk with him. That’s a lot of skills, and a lot of Integrity. And with no Moral Choice in my dilemma pile, it didn’t look good.
It wasn’t. Flawless Victory for Stuart.

Round 4 | | Nicholas Yankovec | ML (-5) |
I’d played this deck of Nick’s at the last tournament, so I knew there were certain things I had to do – making sure I got rid of his Distant Explorations and ‘nixing Duran'Adar’ were jostling for top of the list as it meant, with fewer bonus points coming in, that he’d have to do three missions.
So, before the game Nick’s whining that in his previous three he’s had trouble drawing into a ship. I crossed my fingers that his bad luck would continue. It didn’t, and by turn three/four he had a staffed Jem’Hadar Warship out and was making his way to the Alpha Quadrant.
He makes his way to Study Rare Phenomenon and attempts. I drop a Gomtuu. Attempt ends. Next turn, he attempts again, on the same damaged ship. I drop a Reflections (revealing three events/interrupts), stopping three Engineers, then hit the ship with a Gravimetric Distortion. Attempt ends. The ship now can’t make it home. Next turn, he attempts again, on the same twice-damaged ship. I draw poorly, but burn through an Unexpected, only to draw another Gomtuu. Ship’s destroyed. There was much rejoicing.
Sadly, the rest of the game’s a giggly blur, and the next thing I know, Nick’s back in the AQ with a staffed Defiant, and we end with a Modified Win for him.

Round 5 | | Stuart Marsh | FW (+100) |
My only win was due to a technicality. Seems that Stuart had tweaked a Fed/Genentically Enhanced deck, and that tweak had resulted in all the Feds leaving and being replaced by better, cheaper Non-Aligned folks. Unfortunately, that meant he didn’t have the affiliation requirements for his unchanged missions, meaning that he was physically unable to attempt three of his four missions. Like a gent, after this was spotted, he conceded, shook hands, and that was that. |
