So, I'm a New/Old First Edition Player, Ferengi Edition

by Maggie Geppert, Vice Chairman

30th January 2018

“Once you have their money, you never give it back.”

                                                                                    -The 1st Rule of Acquisition

In this series, I will show off some beginner level decks that people have sent to me.  Today’s deck is Bruce Parrish’s “Pledge to the Latinum (Revised)” deck.  Apparently, this deck is a bit more intermediate level, as the Ferengi have trouble putting together a winning strategy since Ferengi Military Operations got nerfed.  The reason it’s tough to work with is that you have to move between quadrants, which is inherently difficult in First Edition and also mix [Fer] and [Dom] personnel.  The Ferengi have no treaties, so other cards need to be used to get the same effect.

Missions

Where Opportunities Are Made

Deliver Evidence is your Ferengi homeworld, allowing you to play Ferengi Civilians and V.I.P.s for free to the Tower of Commerce.  The other two Alpha Quadrant missions are Resupply Marauder and Supply Terrorists.  The latter is a tempting location for your Ferengi Trading Post, since it has a range of 2.  This deck primarily functions in the Gamma Quadrant, so I suspect you won’t be moving around too much in the Alpha Quadrant, except maybe to get your people from Ferenginar.  This deck mostly works in the Gamma Quadrant.  I would probably solve Further Tulaberry Talks first, followed by Expand Karemman Operations and Reopen Trade Discussions.

Other Seeds

This deck relies on getting Ferengi, Karemma and Dosi together for trade talks at the Dosi Trading Post.  I was wondering about how to get the Ferengi personnel into the Gamma Quadrant, but Where Opportunities are Made, which is downloaded by Reshape the Quadrant, allows you to play them there.  You can also play non-Greed or non-Acquisition Ferengi to the GQ via Cross-Quadrant Expansion, which is downloaded by Where Opportunities are Made and played to your Ferengi Trading Post, with some important restrictions.  This card is also a good draw engine, if you can get a Ferengi ship into the GQ.  That’s pretty straightforward with The First Stable Wormhole seeded, allowing you to get your Bajoran Wormholes out and your DS9 ships can travel more easily in the Gamma Quadrant. Overall, I see several free-play mechanisms – the Dosi Trading Post, Tower of Commerce and New Arrivals, although the latter does limit how many free plays you can use per turn.

Grand Nagus Gint

I see some dilemmas in this deck I haven’t seen before.  Important Guests looks like a nice filter, tying up your OFFICER and SECURITY personnel with diplomatic duties.  Murasaki Effect effectively locks you out of your planet mission for a few turns. Spaceborne Entity is a great choice to seed at a Homeworld, as it will keep your opponent from playing cards for free.  It will also travel around the spaceline attacking ships if they are unwise enough to be at a mission with a matching affiliation icon at the end of their turn.  I also like The Arsenal: Divided.  You need a good number of unique personnel to get past this dilemma, and I see that it could hit this Ferengi deck pretty hard.

Draw Deck

Besides the personnel one would normally associate with the Dosi Trading Post, I noticed a number of mirror Ferengi.  I assume that the mechanism for getting them in play is to use Hidden Fighter to retrieve the Mirror Ferengi Shuttle from your Q’s Tent. From there you can report Mr. Brunt, Mr. Nog, Mr. Quark, Mr. Rom or Ezri to your ship.  They look to be in here to fill some skill gaps.  This deck makes minimal use of Gold-Pressed Latinum and Rules, but the 1st Rule of Acquisition is seeded, allowing you to get out Grand Nagus Gint, who can get you the 35th Rule of Acquisition, which is a nice draw engine.

What I’ve Learned from This Deck

The Continuing Committee has made it easier for people to travel between quadrants, which was a very difficult thing to do previously.
