Wednesday 1E Roundup - 27 MAR 2019

by Charlie Plaine, Acting Director of First Edition

27th March 2019

The Warp Five Program

Welcome to the Wednesday 1E Roundup, a weekly column looking back at the past week in the world of First Edition as well as a preview of the week ahead. If you've got an event coming up and you'd like to be featured in this column, feel free to contact me at cplaine@gmail.com or on the forums via PM to MidnightLich.

The Big News

The Continuing Committee's Organized Play Guide has been updated to version 4.4. Most of the changes are cosmetic, but I'm happy to report that this update brings First Edition (and Tribbles) to the same level of support previously held only by Second Edition. We've always supported the games equally (since we've supported all three), but this document is old and was first drafted when we only supported 2E. Kris Sonsteby (LORE) and the entire Department of Organized Play have worked hard to bring equality and recent changes to the document. Take a look if you have the time, or the inclination to run events (or larger events) in the future.

This Day in Trek

Eleven years ago saw the end of principal photography for the movie Star Trek, the "reboot" of our favorite franchise by producer and director J.J. Abrams. March 27th, 2008 was the last day of shooting and the start of post-production for the effects heavy effort that would come out the following year. The CC has never touched the Kelvin timeline movies because they were not part of Decipher's original license agreement, and the risk of drawing the ire of CBS and/or Paramount was too high. The movies themselves have been polarizing, with some enjoying them and the fact they bring Trek to new audiences, but others decrying them as too different. What do you think of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, ten years later? In our own parallel reality, what form would you want cards from the 2009 movie universe to take?

Do you remember the first trailer for the movie? It's one of my favorites. Here's a look:

Tournament Reports

Over the past weekend, Paddy Tye (KazonPADD) piloted a Starfleet deck to a win in the tournament on Saturday, March 23rd in Grimsby in the UK. Paddy faced off Andrew Mark Alcock's (uglywithglasses) [Kli] [TNG], then against Alex Dixon's (alexd) [Fed] [TNG] deck, and finally against Gary's (admiralgary) Mirror Quadrant deck, emerging with a full win in each game to clinch the tournament. Paddy's tournament report is a fun read, if you'd like to see more about each match.

Paddy's deck, playfully titled Agent George and Agent Gracie, is also available. Turning the whales into temporal agents is fun, and it looks like Paddy made great use of The Warp Five Program for early points. I'm going to give this deck a try in the near future, because it looks fun and relatively simple to play.

And though the details are sparse as of the writing of this column, in seems that 1E Rules Manager Jon Carter (pfti) has won the online tournament for March hosted by Thomas Kamuira (bosskamiura). Hopefully we'll have final results and deck lists available for review in a future column; but, regardless, congratulations to Jon on his win!

Meanwhile, if you played in any events, scheduled or unscheduled, formal or casual, let us know! Send me an email or a private message, and I'll be happy to advertise your event or games to the world in a future column. My contact information is at the bottom of every column each week.

This weekend marks the kick off of the 2019 Regional Championship season with the Ferenginar Region in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. However, there's a bonus tournament as a warp up to the main event on Saturday featuring the Voyager sealed Warp Speed format. Hosted by Ken Tufts (Worf Son of Mogh), this quick format sees players open a Voyager starter deck and some boosters and build a deck to quickly claim two missions. With both Ken and the husband/wife duo of Michael (The Ninja Scot) and Amber (Marquetry) Van Breemen preregistered, it should be a fun and relaxing game before the regional the following day.

Speaking of that Regional, Road to Worlds author Lucas Thompson (edgeofhearing) has started a thread to predict the player who will have the biggest ratings improvement for this weekends events. The Ferenginar regional is OTF Complete Constructed, where Ken Tufts is over a hundred points ahead of the other pre-registered players, Justin Ford (Resistance-is-Futile) and Michael Van Breemen. Who do you think will show the biggest improvement?

The other major event this weekend is "Spring Break Masters" in San Diego, California. What was once a weekend of tournaments is now compacted into a single day, on Saturday, March 30th. Now being hosted by our Art Director and increidble gentleman Johnny Holvea (jjh), the action begins at 10 AM with the Silver Tin Draft. Dan Hamman (SirDan), one of the event planners, wrote an article containing the full schedule and final details about the draft Trek Masters Series event.

Three (3) players are preregistered for the Regional in Canada, and seven (7) will be drafting and playing in the Trek Masters Series in San Diego. We'll be back next week with a look at the results and analysis of the events.

Looking ahead to April, there are Regional events in West Melborne, Florida and Ypsilanti, Michigan with two and five players registered, respectively; but, there's plenty of time for more to do so. Both of the players preregistered for the Florida regional, Daniel Matteson (OKCoyote) and Sean O'Reilly (Jono) are former regional champions, with Sean looking for his 4th title (and a potential back-to-back title).

We'll keep you updated on these, and future championship events, as the season unfolds.

The Time Capsule

We're getting close to the 1st of April, and that means the Internet will be filled with April Fool's Jokes. Many will be lame, some will be epic, but they will be plentful. We will not be taking part this year, as April 1st falls on a Monday, which is our regularly scheduled day for rules and card updates; it's best not to mess with those. But last year, Lucas Thompson spent a bunch of time working on machine learning to produce a hilarious set of cards. It's worth your time to check out Parforil Control, Dr. Pale, and Creasure.

Looking back even further, this week in 2014 we released our first 1E business card. The alternate image version of New Frontiers replaced the lore with the contact information for this website, allowing tournament directors, ambassadors, and players to help players find our website. The card was controversial, with quite a few people and many volunteers disliking the "business card" aspect of the card. Did any of you find your way here with one of these cards?

First Edition March Madness

Only four (4) cards remain in the battle for supremacy that is First Edition March Madness. Here are the results for the Elite 8:

Thus, we have just four cards left. The titanic Objective Assign Mission Specialists (1) will face off against the versatile Doorway Q's Tent (4). Meanwhile, the Alternate Universe Door (7) looks to put an end to the Dilemma Friendly Fire (7). Will we see a doorway vs doorway final? Maybe, if Q's Tent has the chops to knock off the top seed. Does Friendly Fire have the chops to make it into the finals? And even if it does, can it possibly stop the AMS juggernaut? Can anything?

Four (4) cards remain, and it's up to you to determine which cards will face off in the finals to be the 1E Survivor. It's time for you to cast your votes. Remember, each round you vote is an entry into a random drawing for a complete set of Tournament Promo Series N!

That's all for this week's roundup of First Edition news and events. For more news, you can follow The Continuing Committee on Facebook, Twitter, or bookmark our front page.
