Welcome to the Wednesday 1E Roundup, a weekly column looking back at the past week in the world of First Edition as well as a preview of the week ahead. If you've got an event coming up and you'd like to be featured in this column, feel free to contact me at cplaine@gmail.com or on the forums via PM to MidnightLich.
The search for a someone to officially take on the role of Director of First Edition has begun. The search is being headed up by Executive Officer (and current Chair) Maggie Geppert (jadziadax8), and is expected to conclude by the end of April. The director position, which historically has been known as the Brand Manager, is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the 1E department. As the recruitment article says, "...the primary work of the Director of First Edition will be in managing information about the expansion leading to its release: developing spoiler schedules, coordinating with the Department of Communications to advertise the expansion, etc. They will oversee the department staffing, filling vacancies as needed, and serve as arbiter for all internal disputes." Though yours truly intents to apply, I encourage anyone else in the community that is interested to do so as well.
Though the results from the Spring Break Masters in San Diego aren't finalized into the system, we'd like to congratulate Kris Sonsteby (LORE) on his win. Because Kris has been enjoying some golf in San Diego and hasn't had time to answer the usual post-event interview questions, we'll take a more in-depth look at this Silver Tin Draft Masters in next week's column.
But the San Diego Trek Masters Series wasn't the only event on the Road to Worlds over the weekend. In British Columbia, Canada, Michal Van Breemen (The Ninja Scot) emerged undefeated from the four (4) player field with three wins.
Ferenginar Regional - British Columbia winner Michael Van Breemen (The Ninja Scot) |
Michael's Commentary: Did the recent ban of Quantum Incursions (QI) or errata to Temporal Benefactor affect your deck choice? What sorts of decks were you hoping to face while playing your deck? What decks did you hope not to face? Prior to this tournament, did you have much experience playing this deck (or decks like it)? Did you learn anything new about it when you played it this time? Did you use any situational cards (cards that you wouldn't expect to be useful in every game)? Are there any whose usefulness exceeded your expectations? Were there any that you wouldn't include if you played the deck again? Generally, 40 point missions like Investigate Alien Probe are considered risky choice. Did you fear mission theft? What would you nominate as the MVP card from your deck? Do you have anything else you'd like to say about your deck? |
Today is actor Adam Scott's 46th birthday. While probably best know for his role in the sitcom Parks and Recreation, Adam is famous in Star Trek circles for playing the U.S.S. Defiant helmsman in First Contact. It's a role that's stuck with him, as he shares in this clip:
Aside from his victory in the regional this past weekend, Michael Van Breemen also claimed a 4-0 victory in the Voyager Warp Speed sealed event at Ken's. There's no data about who played which affiliations or their deck choices, but Michael came out undefeated in a six-player field. The tournament also featured a scrum in the middle, with four (4) players ending up with ten (10) Victory Points!
It was otherwise a quiet weekend in the world of First Edition, but we did get some more information on Jon Carter's (pfti) deck that won Thomas Kamiura's (bosskamiura) online tournament in March. It seems that our Rules Manager was piloting a Vulcan Hero of the Empire deck (that he calls a "Stop Kirk Contact") deck. Alas, there isn't a deck list or a write up yet, but Jon has shared a few tantalizing tidbits in the tournament thread.
Meanwhile, if you played in any events, scheduled or unscheduled, formal or casual, let us know! Send me an email or a private message, and I'll be happy to advertise your event or games to the world in a future column. My contact information is at the bottom of every column each week.

A big weekend of First Edition kicks off with a double header in Manchester in the United Kingdom. Paddy Tye (KazonPADD) is hosting two tournaments and is hoping to draw eight (8) players across the two events, intended for both established as well as new and returning players. The first event is an OTSD Sealed event, with players also getting three packs of Reflections. This Open format tournament has five (5) players preregistered, including visiting Scot Niall Matthews (sexecutioner). Later that afternoon, there will be a Block Sealed event featuring the starters from Coming of Age. Six (6) players are preregistered, including a new player, in this beginner friendly format. Players will start with the basic starters in round one, and then add some additional cards in susequent rounds. Sounds fun!
On Sunday, Michael Moskop (comicbookhero) is hosting a tournament in Chicago, Illinois, at his place. As he says in the tournament description, "My wife and daughter are out of town. Let’s play Trek." Sounds like a plan! Three (3) players including Michael are preregistered to play some OTF Complete Constructed.
And finally, the Regional Championship season continues with this weekend's Romulus Regional at Lock Yard in Brooklyn, New York. In addition to all of the regular Lock Yard players, including facility owner Christopher Ghiorzi (RomulanAleSmith), regional travelers Robin Honeycutt (robin1234) and Mark Panna (Shambinks) are pre-registered as well. Seven (7) players will be playing OTF Complete Constructed and hopefully enjoying some good Trek (along with the good food and beer). Lucas Thompson (edgeofhearing) has started a thread to predict the player who'll see the largest ratings gain, so go join the fun there.
Next weekend, there are two Regional events in West Melborne, Florida and Ypsilanti, Michigan with three (3) and five (5) players registered, respectively. We'll keep you updated on these, and future championship events, as the season unfolds.
It's the battle of the doorways in the Championship Match for 2019 First Edition March Madness! Here are your results from the two matches this last week:
Both Final Four matches ended in upsets, setting up the final showdown between Q's Tent (4) versus Alternate Universe Door (7). Which dilemma will reign supreme? It's a doorway versus doorway final, and now it's up to you to vote and decide on the winner. Remember, each vote made in this round (as well as the previous rounds) provides an entry into a random drawing to win a complete set of Tournament Promo Series N!
