Weekly 1E Roundup - 26 SEPTEMBER 2019

by Charlie Plaine, Director of First Edition

26th September 2019

Welcome to the Weekly 1E Roundup, a weekly column looking back at the past week in the world of First Edition as well as a preview of the week ahead. If you've got an event coming up and you'd like to be featured in this column, feel free to contact me at cplaine@gmail.com or on the forums via PM to MidnightLich.

Enterprise (Remastered)

The Big News

Last night I held the most recent version of my office hours, where I was joined by Allen Gould (AllenGould) and Brian Sykes (Armus). You can watch the replay at that link, but we had a good discussion about errata, the power of [OS] decks and the changes that have been made to [22] decks. We end with a brief discussion about Tribbles as well. It was a good time, and I encourage anyone that is interested in how I seek to manage 1E to give it a listen. I'll be holding another session in mid-to-late October, so keep your eyes open for that.

This Day in Trek

The fifth Star Trek show, then titled Enterprise, debuted eighteen (18) years ago today with the two-part episode Broken Bow. Enterprise was a prequel to the original Star Trek, set in the early days of humanity's exploration of the Alpha Quadrant. The show would run four (4) seasons, and remains one of the more polarizing shows in all of Star Trek lore. Jonathan Archer, T'Pol, and the Starfleet affiliation would come to First Edition five years later, with 2006's Enterprise Collection.

Tournament Reports

After several weeks of no tournaments, we had three (3) different events take place this past weekend. We'll start with one in Hull in the United Kingdom, hosted by admiralgary at a new venue. This event, an OTF Complete Constructed tournament, drew four (4) players. European Continental Champion Alex Dixon (alexd) went undefeated, piloting an unknown flavor of Federation. Paddy Tye (KazonPADD), Tony Thrustle (NCC-1764) and Gary beat each other up for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place respectively. Paddy played Crush of Empires, a Federation/Starfleet Terran Empire, while Tony played Klingon and Gary also played Federation. Alex, congrats on your win and I hope this is the first of many events in Hull.

Saturday also saw another OTF Complete Constructed tournament in Roseville, Minnesota, hosted by Kris Sonsteby (LORE). Four plyers came out for this event as well, hoping the shake the rust off before their league season begins. Kris ended up winning with a very similar Borg deck to his Continental Winning deck. James Heaney (BCSWowbagger) took 2nd place with "These Are The Voyages III (Or: The Chef Riker-Doctor Phlox Creepy Grin Bake-Off)". Robert Petersen (Hobie) played a [Car] deck titled "Gambling, Hunting and ****ing. A Cartrashian's dream" to 3rd place, and Justin Kaufman played an [OS] [Fed] deck to round out the tournament. Lots of decks there to look at, and James wrote a tournament report as well. Thank you!

Finally, Robin Honeycutt (robin1234) returns to tournament play - no doubt to get ready for his trip to the UK in November. He won a three (3) player tournament in New York, hosted by his buddy Mark Panna (shambinks). Robin played Borg, no doubt trying to learn them so he can better defeat them; he also wrote a quick report talking about his day. Mark played a version of Paddy's Starfleet Whale deck to 2nd place, and Mark's wife Amanda Guether ended up in 3rd place with a Federation deck. Good to see Robin and Mark back to tournaments; keep it up!

Outside of tournaments, there's a delightful report and discussion thread by forum user casualofborg. In the thread, casualofborg tells us about an epic 27-turn game between "Sneaky Ferengi" and "the Feds." Thanks for the report - this is exactly the kind of thing we want to feature here, so feel free to post or send in more reports in the future.

Next weekend will be the October edition of First Weekend First Edition (FWFE). Plan a tournament, get together, test session, or kitchen table game for October 4th, 5th, and 6th - schedule your events now - and you can be in the running for some fabulous prizes!

Tournament Previews

We don't have any local events scheduled for this weekend or next, so let's take a look at the bigger events we have coming in November. That's when the Road to Worlds 2020 kicks off with the Space Coast Trek Masters event in West Melborne, Florida on November 10th and the British Nationals event in Greater Manchester on November 16th.

Space Coast Masters features some amazing prizes and at least three (3) players are planning on attending. Aside from tournament host Daniel Matteson (OKCoyote), visitors Michael Van Breemen (The Ninja Scot) and Maggie Geppert (jadziadax8) will be heading down to join the fight. Who else out there is willing and able to make it to Florida for this event?

The following weekend, The British Nationals event looks to offer some great rematches from the World Championship, with ten (10) players pre-registered from at least three countries. We might even have a world championship rematch, as both World Champion Peter Ludwig (marton88) and runner-up Johannes Klarhauser (Kaiser) are signed up to attend.

Do you have an event coming up? A tournament or get-together? Let me know! Contact me at any of the links at the bottom of this column, and I'll happily promote your event in a future edition of this column!
