Weekly 1E Roundup - 5 FEBRUARY 2020

by Charlie Plaine, Director of First Edition

5th February 2020

Data, Keep Dealing

Welcome to the Weekly 1E Roundup, a weekly column looking back at the past week in the world of First Edition as well as a preview of the week ahead. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions for content, you can contact me at cplaine@gmail.com or on the forums via PM to MidnightLich. I'm happy to write about your tournaments, get togethers, or other 1E-related goings-on. But for now, let's get into the column and see what's been going on in the world of First Edition!

The Big News

The first Monday of the month always brings with it numerous potential rules and format changes, and February's was no exception. We'll start with the sad news: after more than three (3) years as the head of the Errata Team, Matt Zinno (commdecker) has decided to step down from that role. Matt had been a calm, rational, and positive influence on First Edition for years before taking on the Errata Manager role. Matt is directly responsible for much of the game's stability over the past several years, and he will be missed.

But even his impending retirement wasn't enough to slow him down, four (4) new errata were issued this week. Two of them, Gowron of Borg and Tomalak of Borg, were mentioned during the previews for Q Who, and these counterparts now sport the Star Trek: The Next Generation property logo so they can work with Continuing Mission. Similarly, The Wake of the Borg has new text to be more of a meta-tool in the modern game instead of a deck-ruining sledgehammer. And finally, Data, Keep Dealing comes off the OTF Ban List with new and more flavorful text.

And last but not least, newly crowned Rules Manager James Heaney (BCSWowbagger) wasted no time and issued his first official rules update. And it's a big one! Not only did all of last year's temporary rulings get merged into the Glossary, but the Glossary now has a searchable, linkable, HTML version. This is a long overdue quality of life upgrade for 1E players and tournament directors, and we're excited to bring it to you!

This Day in Trek

Rod Roddenberry, the only son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, is turning forty-six (46) today. As founder and CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, Rod works hard to maintain the spirit and power of his father's creation in the modern era. He's worked on and appeared in several Star Trek documentaries, fan works, and products. Most famously, he appeared on camera as a transporter technician in one of the Kelvin-timeline films. Currently, his production company works on the modern Star Trek series, including Discovery, Picard, and the upcoming and animated series Lower Decks. Happy Birthday, Mr. Roddenberry!

Tournament Reports

The only event that took place last weekend was an OTF Constructed Legacy event in Livonia, Michigan, USA. Hosted by Jon Carter (pfti), these Legacy tournaments still allow the use of Second Edition backwards compatible (2EBC) cards in the card pool, but otherwise are identical to standard OTF tournaments. David Bowling (tomek) won the day with Sybok and Surak 2.0, a cool Federation/Vulcan deck that solves two Great Barrier Region missions for a win. It relies on some 2EBC cards, but it's a fun looking deck. Jon Carter (pfti) took second with Michael Van Bremeen's Starfleet Terran Empire deck. Aaron McCullough (aabecame) came in 3rd with his take on a [TNG] [Bor] deck, and Jarrod Cafaro (Takket) rounded out the event playing [Dom]. In Jarrod's report, he seems to have had some bad matchups. Jon also wrote a short report, if you'd like to read his take on the day.

I'm happy to cover tournaments and casual games in this column - you just have to let me know. You can find my contact information at the bottom of every column, and you're welcome to email me, PM me, or just post on the forums. So if you're out there, playing 1E in any way, shape, or form, tell us about it!

Tournament Previews

This Saturday, February 8th, we've got two tournaments scheduled. Robin Honeycutt (robin1234), the host of the year's first 1E Trek Masters Series event, is hosting an event at his home in Eden, New York. He's currently the only pre-registered player, but he regularly picks up two or three others to join him and I expect that to be the same. What will he be trying to figure out ahead of the first major event in New York in quite some time?

Meanwhile, in Germany, 2019 World Champion Peter Ludwig (martok88) is hosting a limited/sealed event, with the exact format to be determined by the attendees. Aside from the reigning champion, last year's runner up Johannes Klarhauser (Kaiser) and Borg fanatic Johan Skoglund (scox) are also planning to attend. I look forward to reading about this event next week, and finding out which format they decide to play.

Finally, The Dojo kicks off its February league with an OTF Complete Constructed tournament. Six (6) players, including two players participating in their first CC-era registered tournament, are signed up to compete. Who will emerge on top? thelleikvold (thelleikvold)? Mathew McCalpin (Keiimaster)? Pope (princedetenebres)? Niall Matthew (sexecutioner)? Sebastian Kirstein (Caretaker's Guest)? Mark Napier (Squircifer)? Or will it be you? After all, there's still time to sign up!

If you have upcoming events, get togethers, or anything else scheduled that's 1E related, let me know. I'd love to feature you and your friends in this column.
