I have been playing Second Edition since the game was released by Decipher. I was an avid 1E player and always felt that the Second Edition of the game did a lot to "solve" some of the issues with 1E and was graphically pleasing enough to draw in new players. About the biggest 2E title I've ever won was at DragonCon in 2009 or so. I was National Champion for USA in 1E in 2013. I've run many, many tournaments in both the Decipher and CC eras for 1E and 2E and have a lot of experience in building communities for these games and several other games. I also have a great deal of experience teaching people how to play Star Trek cards.

I feel my decades of experience with the various Trek card games, Star Trek fandom in general and my desire to make sure people are having a good time playing a fun game make me an ideal fit for this position. My goal is to not only shepherd my favorite Trek game, but to make sure that 2E is healthy and vibrant for years to come.

I ALONE CAN FIX IT. more details will follow, both in my interview, and elsewhere, but my priority is to determine and understand why the 2E community is so angry. We’re constantly at each other’s throats, and these conflicts need to be addressed and brought to some sort of resolution, rather than constantly papered over.

I began playing Star Trek Second Edition when it was first released in 2002. I wasn’t part of any established play group back then, but I played with some friends and we collected the cards. I stopped playing around the release of Necessary Execution, in part because of the problems with the print run meant I couldn’t get the cards in sufficient supply. Then, tragically, I lost most of my cards in a move gone bad and gave up on the game. I came back to the game in 2010 when a friend told me about the Continuing Committee. I joined the forums in 2011 and I been playing ever since.

After a couple years Atlanta’s main tournament director left, and I stepped in to help fill that role. Since taking over as one of Atlanta’s primary tournament directors, I’ve run or supported over 100 local events. I’ve run an Atlanta League for two seasons. I’ve run several successful Regional events. I’ve run special events at Dragon Con including a sealed deck event in 2019 that drew 19 players. My playgroup hosted a Masters event in 2017 which was, up to Texas Chainsaw Masters I, the second most well-attended Masters event to that date. My playgroup hosted US Nationals in 2018 and ran the Second Edition events there. My playgroup hosted the North American Continentals in 2019, which was the most well-attended Continentals in six years, and I ran the Second Edition events there as well. My playgroup will be hosting North American Continentals again in 2020, where I will also be running the Second Edition events.

In 2014 I answered a call for volunteers and began working under Matt Kirk on the Second Edition Creative Team. Since then, Star Trek Second Edition has become more than just a game; it has become a passion and it has become my creative outlet. I’ve met amazing volunteers who give so freely of their time for no tangible reward. I’ve met players and tournament directors who spend their own money to attend and run events to help keep the game alive. I’ve been fortunate enough to serve, at various times, as a volunteer for the Art, Creative, Design, and Writing Teams. I was involved in creating the Continuing Committee's Code of Conduct. I was a member of the first Moderator Team. I’ve play tested cards. I serve as one of two ambassadors for the Cardassia Region, serving the Atlanta area. From late 2018 to 2020 I have served at Chief Ambassador (I am awaiting the naming of my replacement). It would be my honor and privilege to serve again as Second Edition Director.

I’ve been in management roles in one form or another for the last 14 years of my life. In 2007 I began managing a fixture of Atlanta’s LGBT nightlife scene called Burkhart’s. There I was responsible for over 40 employees and my duties included interviewing and hiring job candidates, scheduling and supervising employees, when necessary separating employees, dealing with the Georgia Department of Labor, maintaining payroll, interacting with customers, working with the general manager and the owners to maintain and improve business, dealing with the Atlanta Police and Fire Departments when necessary, and balancing nightly cash drops that could exceed ten thousand dollars in cash and charges on a single good day’s business. I resigned as a manager there in 2014 so that I could study in India, and I left on excellent terms. The management job at Burkhart’s taught me the importance of trust in a team environment and I believe strongly that good operations just aren’t possible without it.

In 2011 I took on the role of Director of Operations for a humanitarian aid non-governmental organization (NGO). My primary responsibility was overseeing all aspects of field operations, which meant I was in charge of coordinating our staff and volunteers in delivering humanitarian relief on the ground. The largest operation I oversaw was the distribution of over $10,000USD of food, supplies, and medicine to the members of a community of internally displaced persons just outside of Gressier, Haiti. In addition, my role of Director of Operations often involved my having to meet with United Nations (UN) aid agencies in Haiti and in New York City and even representatives of various Member States to the UN – I was instrumental in obtaining Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for my NGO. While I still technically hold this position, our organization has been largely inactive since 2018 from a field operations standpoint. This director position taught me the importance of listening, not just to other volunteers but also to the people whom you serve; because ultimately that’s to whom a director is accountable.

In 2013, I took over the role of Research Team Manager for a project called the Robinson Country Intelligence Index (RCII). The RCII is a student-driven joint project between Georgia State University’s (GSU) Robinson College of Business, the Political Science Department of GSU’s College of Arts and Sciences, and the World Affairs Council of Atlanta. Each semester, I manage a team of anywhere from two to six interns and/or graduate research assistants and our job is to pull the data for and maintain the RCII as well as any teaching materials related to its use in the classroom at GSU in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Business School’s Executive MBA and Executive Doctorate programs. As Research Team Manager, my duties include scheduling and supervising interns to coordinate a massive, annual data pull as well as the updating of course materials to incorporate the new data every year. To date, the Research Team is responsible for maintaining over a million points of data for 199 countries going back 14 years. I still hold this position. This management position has taught me the importance of process management – what we do must be completed accurately and on a strict timetable as students and teachers depend on the accuracy and efficiency of our work.

I would like to add that in 2017, in part for recognition of my performance as RCII Research Team Manager (as well as for my years of work with GSU's Model UN Team) I was awarded GSU's Sparks Award, in recognition of "a willingness to go “the extra mile” with good humor and perseverance." My extensive involvement with directing tournaments and volunteering for the Continuing Committee as well as my considerable and varied management experience gives me a unique and valuable combination of the necessary knowledge and perspective to serve as Director of Second Edition. I will draw upon that knowledge and perspective to do everything I can to maintain a culture of trust and teamwork among volunteers, to be accountable to the needs of the Second Edition player community, and to help deliver on behalf of the Continuing Committee quality Second Edition expansions on a reliable schedule.

I've been playing since the very beginning, and played all over the US and Europe (never got to Australia yet!). I probably know most of the players, and consider quite a few good friends. The largest title I have won is the North American Continentals. Obviously I held a similar post to the one I am applying for, back when it was Brand Manager, which appears to be a slightly different job.

So for the past three and a half years I have been running my own company, NLY Building Services Ltd. We are a Building Services Consultancy, where I have a small team of 4 staff, and lead all projects personally. I deal with many clients face to face on a regular basis; I have to organise and manage all staff (unfortunately I have had to fire one member of staff today). In addition to dealing with my direct staff, I also have to employ many other consulting firms to cover all levels of service for my clients. The company is still going strong, and growing, so hopefully that says something about my managerial/leadership skills.

Why do you want to become the Director of Second Edition?

First of all, I understand it might seem unusual for someone to reapply for a position they previously left. The role coincided with my father getting really and passing, followed immediately by my mum getting vascular dementia (which she got from a stroke at my dad's funeral, believe it or not). My heart was not into Trek following this, as well as other things, such as James (Unjustly) Hoskin having a falling out with the CC. The friendship added even more stress to this situation. However, things have changed. I may run my own company, but I have more free time now, and my own office where I spend way too much time, but perfect for acting in this position of Director of Second Edition. I can easily spend half hour to an hour of every day on 2E related tasks. I have ideas to invigorate playtesting.

In addition, I have experience in a similar role, so understand the requirements and the pitfalls. I also think I'm normally pretty diplomatic on the 2E boards, let's say having to deal with lots of trolling regarding Unnatural Selection has given me a thick skin. I also feel I understand how players feel about the current state of the game.

I'll be frank, Ross was a disaster, we need someone calm, willing to listen, able to travel to meet players, and just lead this game somewhere again. This is the only card game I play, it will be the only one I play, so I do not want to lose it, or any of the friends I have met over the years.
