Weekly 1E Roundup - 8 JULY 2020

by Charlie Plaine, Director of First Edition

8th July 2020

Enemies of the State

Welcome to the Weekly 1E Roundup, a weekly column looking back at the past week in the world of First Edition as well as a preview of the week ahead. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions for content, you can contact me at cplaine@gmail.com or on the forums via PM to MidnightLich. I'm happy to write about your tournaments, get togethers, or other 1E-related goings-on. But for now, let's get into the column and see what's been going on in the world of First Edition!

The Big News

After announcing the plan to transition the Errata Team into a newly refocused Balance Team, today I was happy to announce that Dan Hamman (SirDan) and Jason Robinette (JasonRed3) will be the co-leads of the team. Dan and Jason will work together to build a team with a renewed energy and a focus on keeping the game of First Edtion healthy for everyone and competitive for those who crave high level play. I look forward to seeing this team develop and this experiment begin - stay tuned for more information as they get started!

And speaking of the Balance Team, there was a series of balance updated issues on Monday, since it was the first Monday of the month. Six (6) pieces of equipment were given errata: Classic Communicator, Classic Medical Tricorder, Classic Tricorder, Mission Briefing PADD, Vulcan PADD, and Vulcan Tricorder. Each was changed to "break" the ability of these equipment to be downloaded into a mission attempt with a [DL] icon and work immediately; now, you must execute an order to activate the equipment. In addition, Enemies of the State was banned to remove it from the competitive pool for upcoming competitive tournaments. You can read all about these changes, as well as changes to the Watch List, in Monday's article.

Tournament Reports

Last weekend, Kaiserfest III kicked off with the Masks: You're Doing It Wrong scenario event. Four (4) players faced off with in-game social distancing requirements, and at the end of the fray host Johannes Klarhauser (Kaiser) won - on top of a three way tie! Johannes played Klingons, while runner up Johan Skoglund (scox) piloted a Romulan deck. Peter Ludwig (martok88) took 3rd with a Federation deck, and Gerald Sieber (Ausgang) played Ferengi to finish in 4th. Hopefully, everyone had fun - give the scenario a try if you're looking for a change sometime. The details are on the tournament page.

Space Amoeba

The next day, the same four (4) players battled it out in the German Nationals. In this OTF Complete Constructed event, Peter Ludwig won with a Maquis deck - though it isn't available to view as of the authoring of this column. Johannes took second with Voll wie D-D-D-D-D-D'vano, a [Rom] [OS] deck that keeps mostly to the Neutral Zone. Gerald came in third, also playing Romulan with a deck using several Space Amoebas, and Johan rounded out the tournament with a Bajoran/Federation deck. Congrats to Peter on his win!

I know that our Executive Officer, Maggie Geppert (jadziadax8), is running a weekly Tribbles game on Tuesday nights. Unfortunately, I tend to write my column on Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon, which means I can't cover her event from last night in this week's edition. So you can read all about that game next week!

If you're playing, getting together, I want to hear about it! Did you play online? Tell me about it! Play with family? Send me pictures! I'm happy to cover tournaments and casual games in this column - you just have to let me know. You can find my contact information at the bottom of every column, and you're welcome to email me, PM me, or just post on the forums. So if you're out there, playing First Edition or Tribbles in any way, shape, or form, tell us about it!

Tournament Previews

Two events - in the real world - are both scheduled to take place this weekend. Hopefully, all the participants will be smart and safe and not venture out if they're not feeling well - but I trust we all know that. First, Thomas Solway (tksolway) is hosting an OTF Complete Constructed event at his home in Edmonton, Alberta, Candada - the first scheduled since 2016! The event is scheduled to begin at NOON local time on Saturday, July 11th. Though no players are pre-registered at the time of writing this column, I know there are several players in that area and I hope at least three (3) will turn up for this event.

The next day, on Sunday, July 12, Paddy Tye (KazonPADD) is also hosting an OTF Complete Constructed event, kicking off at 11 AM local time in Otley, United Kingdom. Aside from himself, admiralgary (admiralgary) and Tony Thrustle (NCC-1764) are both pre-registered to join in on the fun. Paddy has told me he'll be using his house and his garden to make sure everyone that turns up can spread out and stay safe. It should be fun!

Finally, Maggie's Tribbles tournament series continues with an event next Tuesday, July 14th. Three (3) players are currently pre-registered, and I don't doubt there will be more. Go sign up and play some Tribbles - don't forget, these events are part of the Subspace Championship Series!

Barzan Wormhole (Virtual Promos)

Meanwhile, if you are in a part of the world where gatherings are allow, and if you have upcoming events, virtual get togethers, or anything else scheduled that's 1E related, let me know. I'd love to feature you and your friends in this column. I typically only see them if they're scheduled in our tournament software, so if you're not using that, please let me know!

Short Treks (In Other News)
