Welcome to the Weekly 1E Roundup, a weekly column looking back at the past week in the world of First Edition as well as a preview of the week ahead. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions for content, you can contact me at cplaine@gmail.com or on the forums via PM to MidnightLich. I'm happy to write about your tournaments, get togethers, or other 1E-related goings-on. But for now, let's get into the column and see what's been going on in the world of First Edition!

The Big News

The first ever 1E Cup, hosted by First Edition Creative Manager Paddy Tye (KazonPADD), kicks off on Monday, September 14th. This online tournament, played under OTF Complete Constructed rules, is a single-elimination online tournament. Players are knocked out once they lose until only one, the champion, remains. Per the tournament description, "For each Full Win you get (not Mod Wins), you will win a randomly selected TrekCC Foil! We want people playing for Full Wins here, not Mod Wins. As Gul Dukat said 'A true victory is to make your enemy see they were wrong to oppose you in the first place. To force them to acknowledge your greatness!'." As of the writing of this article, there are ten (10) pre-registered players and Paddy is looking to have sixteen (16) to complete the bracket. Sign up and claim the inagural cup!

This Day in Trek

Today is the sixty-ninth (69th) birthday of veteran character actor and three-time Trek guest star Harry Groener. He's appeared on The Next Generation as Betazoid Tam Elbrun, and followed that up with an appearance as Magistrate Drang on Voyager. His third and final role in the universe of Star Trek was on Enterprise, appearing in the final two-part story as Nathan Samuels. However, outside of Trek, his most famous role is likely that of the Mayor on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the "big bad" of the show's third season. Happy birtday, Mr. Groener!

Tournament Reports

Tuesday Night Tribbles continued last week, on September 1st, with five (5) players seeking victory. It would be claimed by Dan Hamman (SirDan), with 403,365 tribbles playing a deck he's called Stem Cell Research to a total of 301,658. Michael Van Breemen took 4th, with 151,110 and Maggie didn't make it onto the board, but both of their decks are linked on the tournament page if you're looking for options.

Last Saturday, September 4th, saw three (3) players play in an OTF Complete Constructed event - a single day online tournament. Jon Carter (pfti) won the day with a Kazon Battle deck. Michael Van Breemen (The Ninja Scot) took 2nd with a Vulcan deck, while Sebastian Kirstein (Caretaker's Guest) played an unknown flavor of Federation. In Koblenz, Germany, four (4) players gathered on Saturday, September 5th for a Tribbles regional. Tjark Ott (tjark), the host, also claimed victory with 911,542 tribbles to his name. Second place was taken by Benjamin Liebich (monty42) with 453,103, while third and fourth places were taken by Johannes Mette (Johannes Mette) and Marco Puelsch (Galen), with 322,358 and 160,211 tribbles respectively. On Labor Day, Monday, September 7th, Maggie Geppert (jadziadax8) held a belated birthday bash and Regional event, the 1E portion of which was a Warp Speed tournament. No decks are posted so it's unclear which card pool they were using, but Maggie emerged victorious and undefeated at the top of the standings. Her victims - I mean guests - all tied at 6 victory points each. Brian S (JeBuS) took 2nd on tiebreakers, Jason Beyer (sevencrdspud) took 3rd, and Michael Moskop (comicbookhero) took 4th - but I hope they all had fun.

But the 1E event was preceded by a Tribbles match that saw eight (8) players gather to breed some fuzzy balls. Local legend Eric Bieche (biecheer) claimed victory with 927,975 tribbles - a full four hundred thousand more than any other competitor. The visiting duo of Amber Van Breemen (Marquetry) and Michael claimed 2nd and 3rd, with 553,031 and 550,000 tribbles respectively. Al Schaefer (ltkettch17) rounded out the top 4, just behind the Van Breemens, with 542,437 tribbles. Maggie herself came in 5th, Sandy Barnabas (sandy) claimed 6th, Rocket Boy had 7th and Brian S (JeBuS) avoided the pity tribble with 1,213 total.

Tournament Previews

As mentioned in the Big News above, the 1E cup, hosted by Paddy Tye (KazonPADD), will kick off on Monday, September 14th. It's an OTF Complete Constructed event, but will be run as single elimination instead of Swiss - once you lose, you're out. But, you'll win a virtual promo foil for each Full Win you claim, so the further you make it the better your prizes will be!

And, of course, Tuesday Night Tribbles continues with the next event on September 15th, 2020. These weekly events kick off at 7 PM Pacific / 9 PM Central / 10 PM Eastern each week, and are all eligible events for Subspace Championship Series prizes. Check it out if you'd like to play some fun events during the week!

Short Treks (In Other News)

• The First Monday of September has brought the usual rules update. With half a year under his belt, Rules Manager James Heany (BCSWowbagger) continues the good work of managing the rules of 1E. In this month's update, there are no new rulings but plenty of clarifications on some Borg rules. The rules team also added a ton of new cross-references to the rules and glossary.


• Enemies of the State has been errated, and thus unbanned in OTF. As outline in this month's Balance Team update, Enemies of the State has been given errata to fix the most egregious problems with the card. In the new version, the download can't be repeated, it's clear how it works with no dissidents present, and it's been given a countdown. With these changes, the card is returned to OTF play.


• Speaking of the Balance Team, they are still recruiting members. If you'd like to have a hand in the health and stability of the game, we invite you to apply for a position. Applications are always open, because membership will be rotating, so apply if you're interested.


• Should tactics continue to target specific sites on Nors? This week's Friday question is the second in a series about Nors - this time, asking if tactics should continue to only kill at specific sites. The information you guys post and share will be included in our plans for future sites/Nors/tactics, so sound off if you have an opinion.


• Are dual (planet/space) missions worth it? This question, asked on the forums by Joseph Wisniewski (geraldkw), is a good one. Dual missions tend to be complex, confusing, and stealable, leading Joseph to ask if they are worth the risk. What do you think?


• Which treates should be added to, or removed from, the game? These questions are the subject of a thought experiment posted by Daniel Matteson (OKCoyote). There seems to be some desire for - and a lot of trepidation about - a Borg treaty. Ferengi treaty ideas also seem to be popular. Which treaty would you remove if you were in charge for a day? Which ones would you add?


• The site will be down for upgrades this weekend. Our Director of Operations, Brian S (JeBuS), is upgrading our site and forums this Saturday. Be prepared for the site to be down most of the day. Don't panic though. You can chat on Facebook, on The Dojo, or the CC's Discord.

The Time Capsule

Crossover, the first expansion of the Mirror block, was announced this time five years ago, in 2015. This block was the third of the originally planned blocks, and featured a prominent spotlight on the Mirror Universe. With tons of new missions, and new play engines for the Terran Rebellion and the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, Crossover breathed new life into this quadrant and set up more fun for the and versions of the Terran Empire in later expansions.
