Rules Committee Seeks New Member

There is a lot of reading and writing on the application itself, so I'm going to keep this short:

The Rules Committee for First Edition is looking for another member. We have decided to open up for public applications. To my knowledge, the Rules Committee has never done this before -- membership has traditionally been by invitation, similar to Design. But we think we may discover some interesting people who can contribute to Rules with a wide application, so here we are.

Rules Committee Member (First Edition)

The Rules Committee seeks an additional member. The Rules Committee has three main duties:

(1) reviewing, closely scrutinizing, rewording, and approving each and every new card or reprint produced by the Continuing Committee

(2) definitively ruling on difficult rules questions, especially in cases where Tournament Directors disagree or are uncertain

(3) streamlining the rules (both their substance and their presentation to players) without compromising the game's beautiful and attractive strategic complexity

To preserve its impartiality, only the chairman of the Rules Committee is publicly identified. Members are expected to keep their membership from becoming general knowledge.

All Rules Committee work is conducted in posts on the CC forums. (There are no virtual meetings.) Members should be able to check in on the forums long enough to post comments at least every couple of days. Total time commitment is roughly 10 hours per month, although some months can be much more intense and other months can be almost silent.

This is not a Design or Playtesting role. The Rules Committee is responsible for accomplishing the Design goals of each card sent to us to the best of our abilities, even when we think those goals are a bad idea. (This happens.) If you are looking for substantial influence over the shape of new cards, you'll want to fill out the Playtester application rather than this one. (Or both!)

The ideal Rules candidate would have:

• demonstrated mastery over the rules of the game
• a history of explaining the rules to other players in ways they can understand
• a strong desire to further improve the rules
• the analytical skill to identify where and how improvements can best be made
• solid experience playing the game with a variety of players (whether in sanctioned events or not), including recently
• a friendly personality capable of building consensus on a committee that normally operates by unanimous agreement

To increase the Rules Committee's insight into how cards are interpreted around the world, special consideration will be given to fully qualified candidates whose first language is not English.
