Nemesis is Tournament Legal

by Ross Fertel, Nemesis to None!

17th February 2023

Starting today, the latest set for First Edition, Nemesis, is tournament legal. Focusing on the four Next Generation films, the main affiliations that benefit are Federation and Romulans, along with some Vulcan goodness thrown in as well. As usual, here are some cards for other factions to have fun with. Let's see what else this set has to offer.

Recover Stolen MaterialSome strategies take longer to play through than others. A Few Loose Ends lets you take advantage of the point differential with the devastating ability to stop all of your opponents' personnel, even if they just have five points to your zero. Heck, even if they have one point to your zero. That will effectively stop them in their tracks and give you time to catch up. The only thing you want to look out for is if they play personnel after you stop the rest; you will not be in such good shape after that.

Skill selection in invaluable in this game. Depending on how your deck is shuffled, you might need an extra skill and B-4 will have that for you, presuming you are not playing Federation. Note that you probably will not use B-4 if you are rocking Continuing Mission or Reshape the Quadrant, but as non-aligned, this gives a lot of affiliations some breathing room.

A key random selection can derail your plans, so being able to reselect can save you at an important moment, thanks to Change of Heart. Honor and Officer will probably not be found in a Treachery heavy deck, but while ones first thought for this combination might be Klingons, Bajorans, Jem'Hadar and The Next Generation Romulans are on the list as well.

Confront Duplicate is amazingly Continuing Mission friendly. Thanks to the block, we have Picards for several affiliations leaving you with just having to find a way to attempt the darn thing which is not insurmountable. The five points for empathy are another matter entirely but not impossible, particularly with the skills needed on this mission being just four Officer or really three depending on which Picard you use.

Getting points for destroying Borg ships is not a novel concept and Engage the Borg takes that one step further. Why just get forty-five points when you can get an even fifty? You cannot count on your opponent playing the affiliation, but if you seed the dilemma, the points are yours for the taking.

EscapeYou can almost count on your opponent having a draw engine of some sort. Guinan will help even that out, though only once per turn. Additionally, two of her attributes are a natural high of eight. As a bonus, she is a Civilian so if you need a one for your Kurlan Naiskos, the Nemesis Guinan is at your service.

As we saw in Generations, the Recover Stolen Material Objective is very much for the Klingons. If you can get across quadrant issues, this would be great for the Hirogen and Jem'Hadar, both of whom have high strength personnel and the security to match. It is a bit of a journey, but an artifact can be your reward. Remember, there are prizes for going out of your home base.

While most of the ships that will benefit from Versatile Vessel: Crew Transport are Federation, the Cardassians have access to military vessels. They are great at discarding but this will help them draw and get some points at the same time.

A free ship is nothing to sneeze at and Workhorses of the Fleet has plenty for you to play. There are enough classes listed for the Federation to not worry about only having those classes of ships in play. It is not the same for the Klingons, but there is no limit to the pumpable nature of the card, particularly if your opponent is going for several missions. Remember, all missions in play count towards boosting all the attributes, so this could escalate quickly.

Nemesis is tournament legal today. This set would not be possible with the efforts of playtesting, rules, creative, proofreading and art. Have fun playing with them at your next event.
