Affiliation Draft November 2022 Results

by Ross Fertel, Not Germanic

1st December 2022

This past weekend was German Nationals. At the time of this writing, there are two decks posted, both of which are a bit of a mixture.

Markus Eberlein played a deck nominally called Dominion Rules for Profit but is more accurately described as Drunk Vortas. [Editors’ Note: The Continuing Committee does not condone this name in any way, shape or form.] All personnel in this deck are either a Vorta or have Acquisition, by means natural or otherwise. Along with the expected barrels of Tulaberry Wine, there are Vorta enhancers like Hollow Pleasantries and Mouthpiece. There is also a bit of irony in the dilemma pile as this is the only Dominion deck played at the event and it has three copies of Morphogenic Virus.

The Klingon/Cardassian Alliance shines in KCA Forever by Matthias Weller. While this deck goes in that route and has a good mixture of personnel to take advantage of the faction and the Alternate Universe icon, such as Standard Punishment, along with the discard pile, there is more to help this deck succeed. There is a forty or more theme to the missions in addition to the support cards you would expect like the U.S.S. Enterprise-J and Reprimand. There is also a four or more theme with cards like Bariel Antos, Petty Thief and personnel who have a cost discount such as Elim Garak, Crafty Underling. Finally, whenever you bring the Klingons and Cardassians together, you have to shoot at something and Call to Arms and War Without End are there to help with the two-mission win.

But the day went to Benjamin Liebich's Falling Toward Apotheosis. This Cardassian deck crosses quadrants and has Expedient Opportunity to make the travel less cumbersome. The Die is Cast is there to help you get through dilemmas in the Gamma Quadrant. The deck dips a toe into the Klingon/Cardassian Alliance at least insofar as they interact with the discard pile. There are a decent number of cards are in both decks featured in this article. These cards are usually optimized when they take advantage of synergy, but this deck by Liebich makes enough use to have success in the end.

Looking at the draft, no one got a perfect score of five, mainly because everyone chose Voyager which was not played at all. Also, no one choose The Original Series which was one of the five decks played. This means thatthe winning slate of Cardassian, Dominion, Klingon/Cardassian Alliance, Klingon and The Original Series was elusive. No one even got a four, though we have a two who picked three of those. Join me in congratulating eberlems and Marquetry on the predictions.

Looking ahead, the Online Masters are ongoing but Austrian Masters are the weekend of December 16th for both games, specifically Saturday, December 17th for First Edition and the Sunday, December18th for Second. Be sure to check out the boards in preparation for those.
