Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Reman

by Paddy Tye, Eco Warrior

2nd February 2023

In this day and age, we all need to be more careful about the resources we use, trying to be less wasteful and not throwing away things needlessly.

Martin Madden

It's the same with 1E. With only limited on-screen material to work with, we often need to utilise other resources. We don't have any new material coming, so sometimes resources like deleted scenes or extended cuts can provide a small goldmine of otherwise untouched treasures.

In the case of Star Trek Nemesis, there's a pool of deleted scenes to make use of. Thankfully the design team couldn't let that go to waste! Once the Art team had confirmed certain scenes were of sufficiently high enough resolution (or enhanced to sufficient quality) that allowed the creation of an extra personnel: Martin Madden.

(If you haven't seen the scene in question, it can be found here.)

Martin Madden is the new first officer for the U.S.S. Enterprise-E, taking over from William T. Riker. after the events at the Battle of Bassen Rift. Eager to impress, he asked the newly promoted Captain Riker for some advice, and the mischiefous Riker spots an opportunity to play a prank, and Martin fell for it! Being so easily fooled, he doesn't contribute much CUNNING, but does offer a nice mix of skills to help round out your Enterprise-E crew.

Fans of Star Trek Enterprise will of course recognise Steven Culp (who plays Martin Madden) as his acting talents got reused to play Major Hayes, the leader of the MACOs in season three, which the Creative team had to give a nod to in the lore!

Reman Sacrifice

But there are other resources we can try to be less wasteful with. The Remans you'll know already have a theme of being expendible soldiers, as demonstrated by their existing interrupt: Reman Sacrifice. And another of today's new cards, Deliberately Discarded, helps to make the most out of the dead universal Remans that your deck is likely to generate. And it's not just the ones you intended to sacrifice: if your opponent's dilemmas kill them, they also get placed here!

Deliberately Discarded lets you take those dead Remans you've purposely placed in your discard pile, and use those as another resource all over again! Just like when Shinzon's Reman troops placed B-4's body parts on Kolarus III on be found by Picard, Data, and theEnterprise-E crew - to be brought aboard the Federation Flagship and reconstructed by the inquisitive humans for later use on behalf of Shinzon and the Remans!

So what can you use these dead Remans for?Deliberately Discarded

Firstly, you can just recycle one dead Reman back into the draw deck for later use. Now there's no need to worry about running out of a particular skill in your deck if you return those resources to your deck.

Secondly, you can trade in two of those dead Remans for an extra card draw. This can provide an extra draw when needed (say if you haven't drawn into Reman Sacrifice) or upgrades the Reman Sacrifice draw engine so now it can provide an average of three and a half cards each turn (or four cards if your opponent has killed some of your universal Remans for you with their dilemmas)!

Lastly, you can trade in three dead Remans to download another Reman to Remus. Are you missing a key skill? So long as there's a Reman in your deck with that skill, you can just download them as needed! It's only once per game though, so use those resources wisely!

So the Remans can really help you to go green!
