2023 Regional Championships - Apply Within

by Kris Sonsteby, Staff Writer

28th February 2023

Applications are now open for the 2023 Regional Championship season. Regionals are the first step on the Road to Worlds, and are a great excuse to get together with your STCCG buddies at your home or friendly local game store. These are Level 2 (L2) events within our tournament system that offer higher ratings points than local level tournaments, such as WCT leagues and casual gigs. Any player from any region can play in any Regional Championship and any registered tournament director (TD) can run one. The only caveat is these tournaments must be held between the dates of Friday March 31st, 2023 and Sunday September 17th, 2023. Deck lists are also mandatory, but deck checks are left to the discretion of the organizers. Players are therefore highly encouraged to link their deck lists to the event after it has been processed, to limit the number of decks the TD has to input after the fact. It should also be noted that TD's are permitted to play in their own Regional Championship events, so long as all participants are in agreement.

We do ask that TD's keep in mind there may be other high-level events happening during Regional season, such as various Masters Championships and National Championships, so we implore them to be cognizant of the greater Organized Play schedule. Please also work with the TD's in your neighboring states / countries during the scheduling process, in an effort to ensure maximum participation across all of the respective Regional Championship events happening both online and in-person during 2023. Lastly, Regionals may be run using any sanctioned tournament format currently supported by The Continuing Committee. For reference, these are outlined as follows:

Game:First Edition,Second Edition,orTribbles

Format:Constructed, Draft, or Sealed

First EditionCard Pool:Complete, Block, Limited, Traditional, or Virtual

Second EditionCard Pool:Complete, Academy, Hall of Fame, Limited, Traditional, or Virtual

First EditionRules:Official Tournament Format (OTF), Open, or Warp Speed

Second EditionRules:Standard or Slipstream

TribblesRules:Standard or ...With Troubles

All other details regarding these events should follow the parameters outlined in the Organized Play Guide. Please be advised this document is constantly undergoing revisions, and it is therefore advised TD's make sure their guide is up to date prior to the start of the tournament.

Each Regional Championship event organizer will be provided with a physical prize kit that includes eight (8) copies of one of the 2022 Regional promos and eight (8) Regional Championship buttons. In addition to these physical prizes, Regional events also offer Byes or Head Starts for 2023 Continental Championship events. Top players inFirst EditionandSecond EditionRegional Championships will get a Round 1 Bye for Day 1 of the various Continental Championship tournaments. Conversely, top Tribbles finishers will earn a 100,000 Tribbles Head Start at the Continental Championships. Please note that Regional Byes are also no longer Continent-specific, and may therefore be used to play in any of the forthcoming Continental Championships. Thus, you may use a Regional Bye earned in Europe at North American or Australian Continentals and vice-versa. Top players (based on attendance) earn one of these Byes or Head Starts as follows:

# of PlayersBye or Head Start Awarded

3-10 players - 1st Place

11-20 players - Top 2

21-30 players - Top 3

How to Apply

Regional applications are now open and will close at 11:59 PM (in your region) on the final week of the season on Monday September 11, 2023. Please note that while applications will be accepted throughout the Regional Championship season, applicants are encouraged to apply early to ensure the timely arrival of prize kits. To start the application process, you will need to pay the Regional application fee of $20 (all values are in U.S. dollars) for each Regional that you wish to host. These are paid through the Promenade and will provide the purchaser with a requisition number to be included as part of the application. Additionally, TD's who find the application fee to be burdensome on their players can request a fee waiver. We have a limited number of these waivers available to us, and they will therefore be applied on a first come, first served basis. Once you purchase the Regional application fee, please send the following information to your Organized Play Coordinator. Please send a separate application for each game you wish to host.

Are you unsure whom your Organized Play Coordinator is? Well, this should help you out:

• Australia: Director of Organized Play, Kristopher Sonsteby (LORE)

• Europe: Julius Melhardt (Clerasil TOB)

• North America: Michael Van Breemen (The Ninja Scot)

• Online: Jon Carter (pfti)

• All Other Countries / Regions should submit applications to Kristopher Sonsteby (LORE)

Finally, once your Regional application has been approved, you will be able to buy the prize kit. The kits forFirst EditionandSecond Editioneach cost $10 and aTribblesprize kit costs $5. The application fee and the kit costs are divided to help lower the customs burden for our event organizers outside of the United States. The total cost ofFirst EditionandSecond Editionevents is therefore $30; the total cost of aTribblesevent is thus $25.

That's it! The full Regional schedule will be announced next month and we will try to keep a running list of approved applications in the Regional Championships Forum so that people can start planning their trips to various Regionals as they get announced. It is especially important to apply early if you plan to host an event in April, so this information can get out to a wider audience as soon as possible. The sooner you apply, the sooner we can ship you your kits. Best of luck to all at this year's Regional Championships!
