First Edition Worlds 2024 Draft Results

by Ross Fertel, Worldly

10th September 2024

Worlds was the weekend of August 30. We ran a draft to see if anyone could predict what affiliations would be played. Did anyone pick a perfect slate of five? Let's look at the decks and find out.

Preserver ObeliskWe know what the overall goals of the Romulans were in the twenty-second century, but Michael Van Breemen took it a step further with No One On The Ship to Kill - Achievement version, a deck eligible for eight non time locked achievements. There are only four verbs in the deck making it a pretty smooth play experience once the setup of the seed phase is done.

Kenneth Tufts would have a bit more in terms of verb complexity in his Distant Control Deck. There is a hand weapon and Palor Toff: Alien Trader for drawing and recursion respectively. This deck leans a little more into the Reman side of things with The Spires of Romulas and Reman Sacrifice

There is a lot going on with Victoryislife's Smooth Infiltrators deck, one with more Interrupts than personnel! Victoryislife laid out how to play this behemoth of a deck in the notes, but once you are through your deck, the Vulcans can mill around and take the win.

Things are a little more cordial in Justin Ford's Vulans/Starfleet 2.0.0 combing the two affiliations and the twenty-second century timeframe in general. The mix makes Finally Ready to Swim a bit more of a juggling act to pull off. With both affiliations time travelling, HQ: Secure Homeworld has options.

Kenneth Tufts would not only go full Starfleet, he would heavily lean into MACOs with about two thirds of the personnel having that trait in his SF Stolen from a Space Scottsman 2.0. There are enough from the Mirror Quadrant that Crossover is welcome. If you wanted to try out the group at a high level, this would be the deck to use.

The Classic Film Era s featured in Markus Eberlein's Span Increase deck. While there are cards that do that in the deck, this Klingon/Federation deck also has ways to increase the range, taking advantage of what the era affords. There are a lot of Kahn-adjacent cards in the deck but not he himself.

The goal for Brad Snyder's Priceless Jems V2 is nominally Cardassian and Dominion, but there are only seven personnel of the former affiliation. Combined with the Son'a, this deck evidently considers Collecting the Metaphasic Particles some of the aforementioned stones.

Jered Hoffman would Borg with Ratings Pinata 1. All sorts of assimilation goodness abound along with some Of Nines and immature drones to keep things moving around nicely. There are a couple of twenty-third century missions in there for the fun of it.

Distant CotnrolThe Mirror Quadrant was represented in several decks including Justin Ford's Rebels with a Cause 1.0.0 which is firmly in the twenty-third century although some of the twenty-fourth century denizens are there for help.

That era's movement is more pronounced in Thomas V's Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear v.1.1. This Plenty of Captains deck is ready to make a base in the Badlands, not worrying about Terok Nor at all.

Jared Hoffman would go in another direction with If there's any part of this form you do not understand, ask one of our staff for assistance. Now siddown, shuddup and fill out the forms, and if you got any problems, don't come to me with them!. In particular, he would have the Alliance on a Nor but not Terok Nor, allowing greater flexibility for the start of the game. There are a lot of components to the deck, but it is strong once it gets going.

Courtesy of the recent release of Phage, there were a quartet of Vidiian decks with Charlie Plaine playing half of them. Something happened to take his Brian Sykes is Very Smart from day one and modify it to Brian Sykes is Very Smart and Borg are Very Scary for the second day. These were the only decks to use both Superior Surgical cards.

How did Remo G deal with not mimicking theSuperior Surgical Techniques play engine in Driving Backwards? By stocking Organ Theft and The Vidiian Sodality.

What draw engines did Trek Barnes employ in A Vidiian Goes to SF? Ancestral Vision, Know Your Enemy, New Arrivals and Process Ore: Mining. These two decks show that even though the Vidians have some cool new tools in their arsenal, there are ways to get around them.

The day would ultimately go to Michael Van Breemen, who would continue with the straightforward deck in his Two Mission Simple TOS - The Sequel. This deck employs not only Preserver Obelisk but Assign Mission Specialists, though the latter is at least partly there to get out a good personnel. There is a good mix of Decipher era cards along with those made by the Continuing Committee.

Looking at the draft, Armus, Boromirofborg, Dukat, Jadziadax8 and Kazon Padd all picked a perfect slate. In fact, of all the guesses, only one affiliation, Kazon, was not played. We'll see what happens in Online Masters this month.
