by Johannes Klarhauser, Worlds Host

29th January 2025

This is part III in our series of articles about Worlds 2025 in Germany. You can find direct links to all previous articles and everything you need to know about the event in the Worlds 2025: Information Hub thread in the forum.

While playing STCCG is certainly one of our favourite pastimes, the beautiful free state of Bavaria and the Munich area have a lot to offer if you need a break from shuffling and pushing little bits of cardboard around. Here are some suggestions:

I. Around Unterschleißheim

[SD] Schloß Schleißheim: Explore the grandeur of Bavarian baroque architecture at Schloß Schleißheim, a stunning palace complex surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens, just a short walk or bike ride through the tranquil Berglwald.

[SD] Allianz Arena: Football fans won't want to miss the iconic Allianz Arena, home to FC Bayern Munich, with its striking illuminated façade and stadium tours offering a behind-the-scenes look at one of Europe's premier sports venues.

[SD] Flugwerft Schleißheim: Discover the captivating history of aviation at Flugwerft Schleißheim, featuring over 70 aircraft, from early gliders to modern jets, in a museum that showcases the evolution of flight.

[SD] KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau: A short car trip (about 10km) from USH you will find the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, a poignant and educational experience that preserves the memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

II. Munich

[SD] Munich Olympiapark: A hub of activity and history, Olympiapark offers visitors the chance to climb the Olympic Tower for breathtaking views, enjoy sports facilities, and discover the site of the 1972 Olympics.

[SD] BMW Welt: Immerse yourself in automotive innovation at BMW Welt, where cutting-edge car exhibits meet architectural marvel, with tours and interactive displays for car enthusiasts.

[SD] Deutsches Museum: Dive into the world of science and technology at the Deutsches Museum, one of the largest and most comprehensive museums of its kind, with hands-on exhibits and fascinating displays. When I was in school, we went there almost every year on a field trip, and strangely enough it was never boring. I have started taking my own son there now, too. He loves it.

[SD] Hellabrunn Zoo: Located on the Isar River, Hellabrunn Zoo is a world-renowned “geo-zoo”, where animals are grouped by continent in spacious, naturalistic enclosures.

[SD] Hofbräuhaus: AI would probably tell you that it is here that you need to go to experience Bavarian culture at Munich's most famous beer hall, where hearty food, traditional music, and local beer create an unforgettable atmosphere. Others might call it your typical tourist trap and recommend one of the various Biergärten around town instead, like the Hirschgarten.

[SD] Pinakotheken: Art lovers will find treasures at Munich's Pinakotheken, featuring masterpieces ranging from Old Masters to contemporary works in three distinct galleries.

[SD] NS-Dokumentationszentrum: Learn about Munich's role in Nazi Germany at the NS Documentation Center, a sobering museum dedicated to education and remembrance.

[SD] Englischer Garten / Eisbachwelle: Relax in one of the world's largest urban parks, the Englischer Garten, or watch surfers ride the Eisbachwelle, a standing wave in the park's little river.

III. Day Trips

[SD] Regensburg: Wander the medieval streets of Regensburg's UNESCO-listed Altstadt, marvel at the Steinerne Brücke, and visit the majestic Walhalla memorial overlooking the Danube.

[SD] Neuschwanstein Castle Step into a fairy tale at Neuschwanstein Castle, the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle, perched in the picturesque Bavarian Alps.

[SD] Hiking in the Alps Explore breathtaking alpine landscapes with hiking trails suitable for all levels, offering stunning views, charming villages, and fresh mountain air.

And of course there's plenty more to see and do in the area.
