With it officially being 2025 now, it's time to have a look at the preliminary event schedule for the STCCG World Championships 2025 in Germany later this year.
As you can see, I basically just copied the schedule we had in England in 2023. Then, I added some fins to lower wind resistance, and these lcars racing stripes here I feel are pretty sharp. While some of the details are fixed (e.g., the main events of each edition will use modern (1E) / standard (2E), full card pool, constructed format for Day 1 and Day 2), I will try to tailor the weekend according to player demand.
To help us do that, you can make your voice heard and fill in this SURVEY to tell us what formats you prefer.
A few notes in case you are unfamiliar with some terms:
• Random Affiliation Constructed:
Players who have pre-registered for the event at the deadline (4-6 weeks before the event) will receive one of the affiliations/sub-factions listed in the 1E deck builder and will have to bring a deck that primarily uses that affiliation/faction. This means that the deck must be eligible for one of the respective "Play" achievements in the deckbuilder. When in doubt, double-check with the TD.
• Traditonal Constructed:
Players build a deck using only original Decipher cards (proxies are of course allowed!) and build a deck as it was legal in terms of card pool / rules at a particular point during Decipher's production run. Examples of these limited card pool formats are:
a) PAQ era 1996 (up to and including 1st Anthology)
b) "Golden Age" 1999 (up to and including Rules of Acquisition)
c) Full Decipher (including All Good Things and Enterprise Collection)
• Traditional Sealed:
Players open original Decipher product to build a deck from whatever they pull. Examples are:
a) OTSD-based (e.g. 1 OTSD box + assortment of additional boosters)
b) Voyager Warp Speed (e.g. 1 Voyager starter + assortment of additional boosters)
Note that such a format is dependent on product available; this means the popular DS9 sealed is most likely not an option (unless you have such product stashed away and are willing to donate).
• Warp Speed Cube Draft (Bavarian version)
Players draft cards from a pre-prepared selection of both Decipher and Virtual cards, with a focus on the original TNG era Federation, Klingons, Romulans, and Non-aligned. Unlike the randomness of Sealed, in this format players are guaranteed to be able to draft a playable deck by receiving the same basic infrastructure (outposts, treaties, a ship, and a handful of personnel) and independent drafting of missions, dilemmas, and personnel/ships/verbs. More information can be found in this explanatory video.
• The "Cool" Tournament
In this scenario, it is not about winning but what you play and how you play it. Style is the name of the game, where the "coolest" decks earn special prizes (and not just the winning decks!) The tournament director may award prizes to the "coolest" decks at their discretion. This format is unrated.
• Aberdeen Anarchy
If the mastermind behind AA gives us his blessing, the sexecutioner's infamous AA could go on tour and join forces with Kaiserfest for an (unsanctioned) event that might or might not include players forming teams, ripping open Kaiserfest boosters, drinks and wrestling references and whatever ridiculousness we can think of.
• (Pre-)Release Event
A tournament that gives players a chance to play with cards before the official debut of the respective expansion. For example, if the Showdown: Klingon Civil War decks are ready for release, this could be run as a regular event with pre-prepared decks.
• Rainbow Sealed
Players receive original Decipher product to build their decks. Before each round, players will get new packs to further customize their deck and expand their power in the universe. In total, each player will get 1 Premier starter and 1 booster each of all the original non-boutique sets (Premier, Energize, Call to Arms, Necessary Evil, Reflections 2.0, Strange New Worlds, To Boldly Go, Captain's Log, These are the Voyages, In a Mirror, Darkly, and What You Leave Behind). To mitigate effects of bad pulls, players will be able to trade in their unwanted cards for more useful ones, for more information see here.
• Hall of Fame
This constructed tournament uses a restrictive card pool has a subset of Second Edition cards that have been 'retired' by the community via annual voting. This card list identifies which cards are currently ineligible in Hall of Fame format.
• Infinite Diversity Draft
Players receive printouts of a mix of Decipher and Virtual cards from which they will draft their decks. These rules offer players reduced victory conditions for quicker games. A player wins when they have 70 points and have completed one planet mission and one space mission. The in-person time limit for each round in an Infinite Diversity tournament is 45 minutes. See here for more details.
• Random Affiliation Constructed
Players who have pre-registered for the event at the deadline (4-6 weeks before the event) will receive one of the affiliations/sub-factions listed in the 2E deck builder and will have to bring a deck that primarily uses that affiliation/faction. This means that the deck must be eligible for one of the respective "Play" achievements in the deckbuilder. When in doubt, double-check with the TD.
