This past weekend was German Nationals. We ran a draft to see if anyone could predict what would be played. Let's take a look at the decks and see if anyone picked a perfect slate.
We'll start with a deck taking inspiration from the latest set, Realm of Fear. Johannes Mette goes Deep Space Nien Earth with Seit deinem letzten Besuch gibt es nichts Neues! Taking advantage of the new Paranoia events, this deck dives right into the Treachery and Intelligence route. Mette laid out his strategy in the deck notes, paving the groundwork for victory.
Markus Eberlein took things a step further using the most recent headquarters mission, Orias III, Hidden Base, in German National 2025. You might think that the smaller card pool would necessitate a smaller number of cards to draw, but there are one hundred twenty-seven cards in this draw deck! While you have cards that are obvious like the Gamma Quadrant Equipment and Distant Exploration, there are also some high point value missions in the crosshairs.
Marco Puelsch went in a slightly unconventional route with Well, when you mix human DNA with tribble DNA, crazy stuff happens. 05.2025. You can count on a Common build with Deep Space Nine, but those cards are not in the deck at all! Doing so frees up space not needing a Klingon or Cadassian affiliated card. There is a Quark, but the Lubma version for a change.
There is a lot of overlap with two Klingon decks. Benjamin Liebich's Das alles und noch viel meeeeehr, wuerd ich machen wenn ich der Kanzler von Qo'noS waer. | Hannover 2025 Edition goes into the past personnel of several eras along with some treachery in the mix. While it goes for higher point missions, that cannot be said of Florian Ott's Die Buerde des Imperators DM 2025, though there is Trellium-D. However, that is limited by only having one Delphic Expanse Mission in the deck.
The day would ultimately go to Tjark Ott. His Die Glaeubigen - DM 2025 has a lot of what you would expect from the Bajorans with Bajor, Blessed of the Prophets, Orbs and Prophet cards such as Ascension, but there are some Bajoran Resistance members, strategies that don't overtly mesh well with each other, but worked in this case.
Looking at the draft, no one picked a perfect slate. We'll see what happens at Worlds in August.
