Project Snoopy

Project Snoopy

A while back, Tjark and Richard contacted me with an idea. Rather than a standard expansion, we would create a playtest file filled with relatively simple cards. These cards would go to playtesting alongside regular expansions or when we did not have any bigger expansions ready to test, but would never release as an expansion of its own. Instead, the cards will be used as “packing peanuts” (get it? Snoopy? Peanuts?) to fill out expansions going forward. These cards might be used to round an expansion's card count up to a multiple of nine, or might replace a card that proved problematic late in playtesting.

I had already created a variety of relatively simple personnel in an idea file I had labeled “Necessary Evil 2.0.” These personnel followed the Necessary Evil theme of star powered personnel appearing in alternate affiliations. Several of these cards were drafted directly into Project Snoopy. At Tjark's request I added a few missions designed to be attemptable by two affiliations each. We also opened it up to all the other designers, who can (and have!) add cards as we go. In fact, one of the cards that made it into this expansion has been in Danny's design files since 2017. You will see that one on Friday. Today we will see three personnel from Project Snoopy, two of whom are affiliated versions of personnel who have appeared as non-aligned in the same story, as well as the first new Vidiian personnel.

Weyoun (Faithful Servant)

Weyoun

Following the death of Weyoun's fifth clone in a rather suspicious transporter accident, the Dominion activated Weyoun's sixth clone. This clone proved defective, at least by Dominion standards, and soon defected. This character's original version allows him to defect to anybody, but in the show he specifically defected to Odo, whom he views as a Founder. This version has Weyoun adopt Odo's traditional Bajoran affiliation, though not the Deep Space 9 icon since he never reached the station.

Weyoun's ability was inspired by one of the original versions of the personnel, Weyoun (Instrument of the Founders). That version of Weyoun gets attributes +2 and gains a skill while present with a Founder. The new version treats Odo as his Founder, obtaining a similar bonus while present with that specific personnel. Both versions end up with a mixture of six skills, including a second level of Honor or Treachery. The fact that Faithful Servant has to be present with a specific personnel makes him a lot less reliable, but as compensation he starts with higher Integrity.

Since you can play Weyoun (Faithful Servant) at Bajor (Blessed of the Prophets), I would not be surprised to see him make an appearance in an Orb-based Integrity deck. That said, he has equally good Cunning and Odo tends to have slightly higher Cunning than Integrity, so you might also want to try him with Cunning-based missions like the story-appropriate Evade Dominion Squadron.

B-4

B-4 (Irresistible Bait)

Shinzon used parts from Noonien Soong's prototype android to lure the U.S.S. Enterprise-E to Kolarus III. Once the crew of the Enterprise brough the android aboard, the Remans activated hidden programming to make B-4 access critical information regarding Federation fleet deployments. Fortunately for our heroes, Data and Geordi La Forge discover the illicit access before B-4 could do any real damage; otherwise the infiltration could have been much worse.

The existing B-4 (Dangerous Simpleton) focuses on the character's role as an Android. You can play him solely for his prodigious (and cheap) Strength, but he really shines when you can easily reveal three Androids from hand to “activate” his Cunning, Intelligence and Treachery. The new B-4 (Irresistible Bait) has you pay more, but stays in the “activated” mode with 9 Cunning and the extra skills (as well as a bonus Programming).

B-4's ability allows you to reenact Nemesis, planting him among your opponent's crew for a bit of Misdirection. But with a cost of 4 and mediocre skills for Founder Trap, I expect he will more often see play as a high-attribute personnel. In that respect, he may also see trips to the Gamma Quadrant alongside his brother Data (From the City of Rateg) with the recent Orias III (Hidden Base).

The Doctor

The Doctor (Shmullus)

The newest affiliation in Second Edition receives its first new personnel with The Doctor (Shmullus). In Lifesigns, The Doctor created a holographic body for Danara Pel (Loving Life). The two develop a close relationship (“romantically involved,” in First Edition terms), and she bestows upon him the name “Shmullus.”

The Doctor takes on one of the big themes for the Vidiians, growing weaker as you progress. Play The Doctor early and you get Programming (to create Danara Pel's hologram) and a bonus Medical. But wait too late and he will go down to a slightly underwhelming four skills.

Technically The Doctor is playable at Grid 296 (Holographic Training Facility) in addition to Vidiia (Locus of Infection), but I doubt he would replace The Doctor (Brilliant Template) in that deck type. I would be interested in seeing him used with New Earth (Quarantine Infected Crew). Attempt it first and The Doctor will provide both of the necessary Medical (plus one of the Exobiology), and then boost your numerous Medical personnel for the rest of the game.

Going Forward

I hope you enjoy these “peanuts.” The next build of Project Snoopy has already gone to playtesting, so I am sure you will be seeing more in the future!
