That's What Jadzia Ended Up Saying

by Michael Moskop, Creative Thinker

25th November 2013

Gen Con fever tends to hit people pretty early. There is lodging to book, tournaments to set up, transportation to arrange, as well as a myriad of other "i's" to dot and "t's" to cross. Of course, one of the most important details is something I tend to procrastinate on: making sure to have decks built and ready to play. That was the task I needed to complete back in July 2012. Gen Con 2012 was the first time I had been to the convention in its "modern" era and I wanted to play as much Trek as I could. With that in mind, I saw something that looked very intriguing: a "Cool" Tournament. As soon as I read the description of the tournament, I knew that I had to participate. I have always thought that creativity is what makes games like STCCG fun, and tell me, what is more "Cool" than a really creative deck!?

Socializing with the Staff

Now we get to the problem I ran into. The "Cool" Tournament was a First Edition tournament. At the time, I was only just returning to 1E competitively and still trying to drum up interest in my area (with the help of Corbin Johnson and Jason Beyer). I needed to come up with an idea that was playable, creative, and could be played on little sleep (since we all know how broken down we all are by Sunday). After some failed attempts, I came up with an idea that I could have fun playing…all ladies!

With Continuing Mission and TNG decks all the rage, why not see if the women of the U.S.S. Enterprise could fly the ship themselves!? With a good skill set, multiple Beverlys, Deannas, and Tashas running around (thanks to some AU icons), and constant innuendo throughout the tournament, the deck was a blast to play and in the end, netted me the prize of "Coolest" Deck. Not bad for a bunch of ladies running the ship, huh? (You can check out the deck below.)

Now I know what you are saying: "Why are you rambling on about a tournament that happened a year and a half ago?" The reason is that my "Cool" prize was the chance to design a card! I got to work right away on it, practically as soon as I got home from Indianapolis! I knew that since it was the ladies that got me the prize, I should do something female related. I did a lot of research and really looked for something in that space where I could work and contribute something new that I thought people would stock in their decks. Eventually, I submitted my idea and it was well liked, but just like any creative process, things happen and stuff gets put on hold. Fast forward to a couple months ago. My card finally found its way into the playtest files and got approved. Now, originally my idea was for a TNG story, but due to the delays and the new DS9 block on its way, I had to come up with something new. Luckily, I knew just where to look for some female sassiness aboard the station... Jadzia Dax! So folks, here she is after all that work, Socializing with the Staff!

The obvious combo for OTF is Matriarchal Society. Anyone can see that. The fun begins when you toss Talosian Cage in the middle of that combo or go dig out cards like Distraction, Brief Romance, and Kidnappers. In Block, gender now becomes important. Ferengi players will need to know where Lwaxana is to help them get past Jadzia's constant meddling. Hopefully, we will see Dr. Bashir's failed attempts at love pop up in a lot of future decks.

Oh and by the way. This is where I warn you that I won the "Cool" Tournament in 2013 as well, so you haven’t heard the last from me. Now, how can I turn a family vacation into a card…?
