Trek Masters in San Diego - The Phoenix Rises

by Charlie Plaine, Chairman

15th December 2014

As previously announced, January 2nd - 4th, 2014 will see Trek Masters - San Diego take place as part of the annual Phoenix Tournament. These high level events for First Edition, Second Edition, and Tribbles will be supplemented by side tournaments and gaming of all kinds - check out all the details below. We are eager to host any travelling players and to share the details of our plans for this event.

The Venue
Tiburon Carlsbad HOA Clubhouse (Map it)
3115 Avenida de Anita
Carlsbad, CA 92010

The venue is in the middle of a residential area with plenty of street parking usually available. The venue has ample space and big tables, and there is plenty of room to stretch out and relax between games. Weather in California in January is usually in the 60s or 70s (F), so it should be very comfortable - a light jacket might be warranted. The clubhouse features a small kitchenette with a refrigerator, which we will stock with snacks, sandwiches and beverages; all of which will be provided with the admission fees. Even so, there are a number of restaurants and local dining establishments within just a few minutes drive of the venue that provide more options for food.

The Schedule
Here is the schedule of events and side events planned for the Phoenix weekend:

Friday, January 2nd

1 PM: Doors open; weekend officially begins. Come and meet and greet with other local and visiting players, grab some lunch, or just get situated before the main event of the day. Spontaneous Tribbles are likely to occur.

3 PM: Second Edition Trek Masters (Pre-register). The Second Edition Standard Constructed event will start the weekend with some top-notch competition. Players will battle over five (5) rounds to see who will become the second North American 2E Trek Masters Champion and claim their very own playmat and command-star button. The Top 8 will earn a Spock (Man of Integrity) foil, and all participants will receive a staff-star button.

9 PM: Friday Night Gaming. Join us for board games, card games, and more in one of our local weekly traditions. We'll have Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, Legendary, Cards Against Humanity and more. Bring yourself, or bring your favorite game, and there will be much fun had by all.

Saturday, January 3rd

9 AM: Doors open. Stop by any time between 9 and 10 to register for the First Edition tournament.

10 AM: First Edition Trek Masters (Pre-register). This First Edition OTF Block Constructed events is one of the only high-level Block events since the card pool's creation. Players will battle over (5) rounds to see if TNG or DS9 will be the superior strategy, in a format where many of the game's stable cards are unavailable. The winner will again claim their very own playmat and command-star button, while the Top 8 will earn a Mr. Spock foil. All participants will receive a staff-star button.

7 PM: After a dinner break, join us for Tribbles!

8 PM: Have you ever wanted to take command of your own starship, with your own crew at their stations? Well, this is your chance! Play Artemis, the spaceship simulator, with Trek fans and friends! In Artemis, up to six (6) players at a time take command of one of several Bridge stations - navigation, weapons, communications, sensors, or engineering - while one takes the Captain's Chair. Compete in diplomacy, exploration, or combat missions in this unique and fun experience!

Sunday, January 4th

9 AM: Doors open. Spontaneous Tribbles warm up tournaments are very likely.

10 AM: Tribbles Trek Masters. Bring your favorite Tribbles deck, if not your best, and compete for the most coveted of all Trek Masters Championships. Take on the best Tribble breeders in the World in the birthplace of modern Tribbles! The winner will claim the last of the special playmats, and the Top 8 players will take a 1 IDIC foil home to call their own.

1 PM: If there is interest and enough players are available, we will happily schedule a Sunday afternoon "cool down" tournament. Let us know if you prefer to play 1E, 2E, or if you'll be heading out to do other things.

Throughout the weekend, there will be special prizes, live Phoenix Tournament achievements, and Trek trivia available. The more you play and participate, the more chances you have to win!

There are two options for players to pay for their participation in the Phoenix Tournament: a weekend pass or a day pass. The weekend pass is $30 and covers entry into all the weekend's events. Day passes are available for Friday and Saturday for $15 each; a Sunday pass is $10. So if you're planning on coming for the whole weekend, save $10 with the weekend pass! The passes not only grant you entry into the events, but they will give you access to the food, snacks, and beverages that will be stocked in the venue. Water, soda, chips, crackers, fruit, veggies and sandwich fixings will all be available for all pass holders.

  Friday Saturday Sunday
Day Pass $15 $15 $10
Weekend Pass $30

Anyone that wishes to come observe the events may do so free of charge.
