FINALIZED - 2017 World Championship

by Sean O’Reilly, Tournament Director

25th August 2016

Hailing frequencies open.

“Stardate 2017.10. This is the captain of the U.S.S. Atlantis. We are in Spacedock preparing for a year journey into deep space. The crew is ready. I am ready. Hopefully the aliens are ready for us. Let the journey begin.”

Star Trek is about discovering new worlds and new civilizations. However, sometimes the journey takes us to familiar places like Data returning to Omicron Theta or Sisko returning to his family restaurant after becoming The Emissary.

2017 is a milestone year for The Continuing Committee. The organization that is keeping alive the Star Trek Customizable Card Game across the world will celebrate its tenth anniversary next December.

One of the cities where players continue to hold Star Trek CCG tournaments is Orlando, Florida.

Florida – the state that delivers all kinds of weird news. Even reputable newspapers devote an entire blog to the stuff: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/strange/floriduh-blog/.

Things will not get any weirder (we hope) in October 2017. That is the month the Star Trek CCG World Championship Weekend returns to Orlando. Never say you can’t go home again.

If you are a longtime player of the game you will recall Decipher held its second DecipherCon in Orlando back in 2000. Seventeen years later we welcome you to join us again in the land of alligators, orange juice, hanging chads and face-eating “zombies.”

The Continuing Committee’s Organized Play coordinators awarded the Orlando/Melbourne play groups a Masters tournament in 2015. Based on the success of that event, 2016 saw the groups receive the right to host another big event, the North American Continental Championships.

For 2017, the Continuing Committee decided Orlando is worthy enough to host the largest event it offers. Organized Play listened to its players who asked for a host city known as a tourist destination.

We hope people from across the United States, Australia, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Sweden, The Netherlands, Austria, Russia, South Africa and everywhere else the game is still played will come to Orlando to enjoy some great games, great weather and the area’s tourist attractions.

Oh yes, did I forget the big reason to bring the entire family to Orlando, even if not everyone in the family plays Star Trek CCG?

Orlando is the home to Walt Disney World, Sea World Orlando, and Universal Orlando.

Kennedy Space Center, the launching pad of America’s space program is a short 45-minute drive east of Orlando. Busch Gardens Tampa is ninety minutes away to the west. For families with kids, Legoland Florida is Winter Haven, only about an hour’s drive from Orlando.

And then there are the famous beaches all nearby. Daytona Beach, Cocoa Beach, Clearwater Beach, and St. Petersburg Beach can all be reached in less than two hours.

There is no reason not to come next year to Orlando for the Star Trek CCG World Championship Weekend. Airfare and hotel prices are very reasonable. For example, a round-trip flight from Perth, Australia to Orlando can be purchased for just $1,200.

We are planning on hosting the World Championships at Campus Cards and Games. The store is owned by Star Trek CCG player Eric Robinett.

Both the 2015 Masters and the 2016 North American Continental events were held at the Campus Cards and Games. Players who attended agreed the venue was a perfect place to play. There is ample gaming space for multiple events at the same time. The store also has a license to serve beer (both bottles and on tap).

The weekend the Championships will be held has yet to be confirmed. We hope to finalize the dates and times over the next two to three months.

We are planning on holding the 2017 World Championships over five days: Wednesday to Sunday.

Our current plans include hosting: a WCT Champion’s League event on Wednesday night, championship events for both Star Trek CCG 1st Edition and 2nd Edition (split up between Day 1 and Day 2 tournaments), various 1E and 2E side events, nightly Tribbles CCG tournaments, and concluding with the Tribbles CCG World Championship event on Sunday. Of course, everything is subject to change.

We will be working hard to make the 2017 World Championship Weekend worth attending. Over the next couple of months we will be posting more information on a hotel block, full schedule of event, and additional attractions worth visiting during your trip to Central Florida.

We hope to see you in 2017!
