So, I'm a New/Old First Edition Player, Non-Aligned Edition

by Maggie Geppert, Vice Chairman

26th September 2017

They're right, Baran. And you know it. I say kill him - now.

- Jean-Luc Picard, Gambit, Part I

In this series, I will show off some beginner level decks that people have sent to me.  Today’s deck is James Heaney’s Warlord (Or: The War Council Seeks the Stone of Gol) deck.  Non-aligned has come a long way from Premiere, where the rule book said they weren’t intended to be a complete playable affiliation.  I especially love this deck because it’s somewhat themed around yet another of my favorite Next Generation episodes, the two-parter Gambit.

The selection of quality [NA] missions has certainly increased in the CC era.  Conduct Stellar Research brings in Amargosa Observatory.  Observe Stellar Rebirth is just plain gorgeous!  Raid Ancient Burial Site very handily gets you a Mercenary Ship.  Man, does everyone have a Revenge Plot against Picard?  All those V.I.P.s might help you out with Amnesty Talks.  And finally, here’s the old standby, Qualor Rendezvous, which is the only mission not of the CC era.  It’s tough to say which missions I would pick.  I guess it really depends on how the spaceline shakes out.

Other Seeds

Continuing Mission is present to give everyone the TNG icon.  The seeded free report engines are Attention All Hands for [Univ] personnel, War Council for [NA] CIVILIAN and V.I.P. personnel and Mercenary Raiders for Galen and Stone of Gol personnel.  The last one is downloaded by Continuing Mission.  (See, I’m learning!)  I’m assuming Kamala will be sitting in the Duck Blind for extra draws.  Do you remember my last article where I said, “It might also be fun to put in Amargosa Observatory, which came out since this deck was built.”?  Well, it’s here in this one, along with The Nexus and Dr. Tolian Soren. After consulting with James, I’ve learned that the Nexus isn’t necessarily in here to net you the extra 20 points, though if you can combine it with Mercenary Raiders, you can get the two mission win.  However, he shared with me that it’s also fun to seed it in the [GQ], [DQ] or [MQ] if your opponent is avoiding the Alpha Quadrant.

James has very helpfully provided his dilemma combos in the deck notes.  One important note says that in the combo of Murasaki Effect + Shot in the Back + I Hate You, you should kill a Youth with Shot in the Back.  The Nexus should be seeded with the The Swarm + Cytherians + Female’s Love Interest & Garbage Scow.  And I would love to note what looks like a really wicked awesome conversion of Symbalene Blood Burn.  It takes an OK 2E Damage dilemma with rather low requirements and turns it into a really deadly dilemma here.

Draw Deck

This is one of the slimmest builds I’ve ever seen in either 1E or 2E.  Barring Let’s See What’s Out There to draw cards and an extra War Council, it’s all personnel and ships.  James notes in his recent tournament report that Lakanta and Mortal Q are the MVPs of this deck.  Lakanta helps out with Cytherians by boosting your ship to leave one end of the spaceline and come out the other. Mortal Q gives you access to silly amounts of physics and geology, but does take away some leadership.  It’s also a good thing that there’s no Q’s Tent in this deck.  I would have thought that Tallera,  Galen and Baran would be the heavy hitters, so those other guys being listed as clutch surprised me.

What I’ve Learned from This Deck

You don’t need the Tent!  Free your miiiiind, and the rest will follow!

Final Trivia

I only have one white border Premiere card left in my collection, a Vulcan Stone of Gol signed by Robin Curtis.  I didn’t yet have a black border version (or a Tallera for that matter) the first time I saw her at a convention.
