2018 Regional Applications

by Maggie Geppert, Vice Chairman

1st February 2018

Applications are now open for the 2018 Regional season.  Regionals are the first step in the Road to Worlds 2018 in Sydney, Australia.  They are Level 2 events within our tournament system and offer higher ratings points than local events. Any player from any region can play in all Regionals and any tournament director (TD) can run a Regional event.  Regionals may be held any time from Friday, March 30th, 2018 through Monday, July 2nd, 2018.  Deck lists are mandatory for these events, but deck checks are left to the discretion of event organizers. Also, TDs are permitted to play in their own Regional events as long as all players agree to this.

We do ask that players keep in mind that there are some Level 3 and higher events happening during Regional season, so we hope you will plan your schedule accordingly.  The following events have been confirmed.  There are a few other L3 tournaments in the works during this time period.

U.S. National Championships in Atlanta, GA, USA

April 27th – 29th, 2018

Swedish National Championships (1E), Göteburg, Sweden

May 5th or 6th, 2018

North American Continental Championships in Chicago, IL, USA

June 21st – 24th, 2018

German 1E National Championships (Kaiserfest) in Munich, Germany

June 30th, 2018

Regional Championship Events
Regional Championship events must be run using any sanctioned tournament format or type, as outlined in Section 4 of the current Organized Play Guide. Each event must choose a game, a format, a card pool, and a rule set, as follows:

Game: First Edition, Second Edition and/or Tribbles

Format: Constructed, Draft or Sealed

Card Pool: Excelsior (2E), Academy (2E), Block (1E), Complete, Limited, Traditional or Virtual

First Edition Rules: Official (OTF), Open or Warp Speed

Second Edition Rules: Slipstream or Standard

Tribbles Rules: Standard or ...With Troubles

All other details regarding these events should follow the guidelines outlined in the Organized Play Guide.

Each Regional event organizer will be provided with a physical prize kit that includes eight (8) copies of one of the 2018 Regional promos and eight (8) 2018 Regional Championship buttons. In addition to these physical prizes, Regional events offer byes or head starts for all 2018 Continental Championship events. Top players in First Edition and Second Edition will get a Round 1 bye for day 1 of Continentals.  Top Tribbles finishers will earn a 100,000 Tribbles head start.  Please note that starting this year Regional byes are not continent-specific.  You may use a Regional bye earned in Europe at North American or Australian Continentals and vice-versa.  Top players (based on attendance) earn one of these byes or head starts as follows:

# of Players

Bye or Head Start Awarded

1st Place

Top 2

Top 3

If the top player or players have already previously earned a bye or a head start for the next Continental Championship, then byes or head starts will trickle down to lower placing players who do not also have byes.

How to Apply
Regional applications are now open and will close at 11:59 PM (in your region) on Monday March 12th, 2018. Please note that late applications may be considered at the discretion of the Department of Organized Play, but applicants are encouraged to apply early. The application process is very easy.  First you will need to pay the Regional application fee.  Each game requires a $20 application fee (all values are in US dollars).  You’ll pay those fees in the Promenade and use the requisition number as part of your application.  Additionally, player groups who find the application fee to be burdensome can request a fee waiver for one of the games.  We have a limited number of these waivers available to us, and we will apply them on a first come, first served basis.

Once you purchase the Regional application fee, please send the following information to your Continental OP Coordinator.  Please send a separate application for each game you wish to host.

Are you unsure of your continental coordinator?  Well, this should help you out:

Finally, once your Regional is approved, you will be able to buy the prize kit.  The kits for First Edition and Second Edition each cost $10 and Tribbles costs $5. The application fee and the kit costs are divided to help lower the customs burden for organizers outside of the United States.  The total cost of First Edition and Second Edition events is $30; the total cost of a Tribbles event is $25.

That’s it!  The full Regional schedule will be announced on Monday, March 19th, 2018.  We will try to keep a running list of approved applications in the Regional Championships Forum so that people can start planning their trips to various Regionals.  It is especially important for people like me, who hold their Regionals in early April, to apply early so this information can get out to a wider audience as soon as possible.  The sooner you apply, the sooner we can ship you your kits.

Oh, and speaking of the kits, this year's foils are pretty spiffy.  We have paired up the Master's ships with their matching commanders, as we have done for the last several years, so we Kivas Fajo, Baran and Balok (on 10 Battle).
