So, I'm a New/Old First Edition Player, Voyager Edition

by Maggie Geppert, Vice Chairman

29th May 2018

“We're alone - in an uncharted part of the galaxy. We've already made some friends here... and some enemies. We have no idea of the dangers we're going to face. But one thing is clear: both crews are going to have to work together if we're to survive.”

                                                                        -Kathryn Janeway from “Caretaker”

In this series, I will show off some beginner level decks that people have sent to me.  Today’s deck is James Heaney’s “Caretaker (Or: James's First D.Q. Adventure)” deck.

Ancestral Vision

This Delta Quadrant only deck scoffs in the face of the You Are a Monument Rule (you have to complete at least one Alpha Quadrant mission or your win condition is now 140 points).  Probably the most important mission in the deck is Liberation, because you will seed Caretaker’s Array there, which fuels the whole deck.  Since you’ll need a lot of points to win, you’ll want to go for the big missions, so you’ll probably want to attempt Return Life-form, with its very easy requirement of Kathryn Janeway, first if possible.  Prevent Annihilation has a similar requirement structure, only this time B’Elanna Torres nets you the 40 points.  B’Elanna will also help you with Investigate Quantum Singularity.  The range requirements in the Delta Quadrant tend to be large, so you can help minimize that problem if you Collect Omicron Particles or attempt Reinitialize Warp Reaction early on.

Other Seeds

Home Away from Home makes this deck go, as it is the reporting mechanism and a free play engine for the Delta Quadrant.  The U.S.S. Voyager is seeded using Caretaker’s Array.  You can also use New Arrivals as a draw engine, but be careful of how many free plays you have in a given turn.  If you play more than one person for free in a turn, it gets discarded.  According to James, your personnel who come along with a Type 9 Shuttlecraft from Full Complement of Shuttles don’t count towards this limit.  I doubt that you’ll need to worry about using the first-turn download, as there are seven of them in the deck.  Finally, Ancestral Vision is probably the most important and reliable draw engines in this deck.  You can use Defend Homeworld to get Tabor to fuel this from turn 1.

Type 9 Shuttlecraft

The dilemmas are mostly themed around Shades of Grey events (side note: good stuff from a terrible episode).  All four of these seeded events give boosts to some of the less desirable PAQ-era dilemmas. (PAQ = Premiere, Alternate Universe or Q-continuum expansions, for you new folks.)  James has mostly seeded the dilemmas named on those events, but has also sprinkled in some other very good dilemmas.  For instance, DNA Clues is a good setup for Male’s Love Interest & Plague Ship“God” follows nicely after Buried Alive and Null Space.  I like how he has a Battle Bridge Side deck available to damage ships hit by these dilemmas.

Draw Deck

This deck is very slim.  There are few verbs in it, really only a couple of Handshakes and some necessary equipment.  James mentions that Bennet is one of his other draw engines, but he’ll have to go soon, since he didn’t get converted in Metamorphosis.  Marie Kaplan, on the other hand, did get converted and she’s got a nice skill set.  The other key people as mentioned before are Kathryn Janeway and B’Elanna Torres.  Basically, you want to play [Stf] personnel for free to Home Away from Home or get people out on the shuttles, then go do missions.

What I’ve Learned from This Deck

Sometimes good cards come from terrible episodes.
