European Continentals 2019 is coming to Manchester

by Paddy Tye, First Edition Creative Manager

21st November 2018

With Worlds 2019 being held on mainland Europe, Julius has kindly agreed to let the UK host European Continentals, seeing a return to the UK for the first time since 2014.

Where?

Having previously been held in London in 2014, this year we have opted for the far cheaper option of Manchester, with our friends at FanBoy3 agreeing to host the tournaments over the weekend of Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June. This is just under 7 weeks before Worlds 2019 arrives in Vienna, and don't forget there are byes for Vienna to be awarded to the winners!

FanBoy3 will be acting as hosts. Since their recent renovation and move to Hilton Street they have a large basement which can easily accommodate big tournaments such as this. The £10 entry fees each day will be split between the venue and a cash prize pool for the winners. I will be acting as tournament director for the 1E events and Andrew Mark Alcock (uglywithglasses) from Grimsby will be acting as tournament director for the 2E events.

While the exact schedule is yet to be agreed, the 1E main event is expected to take place on Sunday and the 2E main event on the Saturday with side events on the other days. Feel free to message myself and Mark with any events you wish to see -- anything from sealed to Aberdeen Anarchy!

But what about Brexit? While nothing has been formally agreed yet, the draft proposals have all retained the ability for European citizens to travel to the UK without the need for a visa. Depending on your views, a "bad Brexit" could just result in cheap beer prices for our European visitors!

Manchester is a great venue, with easy travel options for European visitors. With more than 6 months to go until the event, there are plenty of cheap hotel reservations available on the internet too. We look forward to welcoming you all there!
