An Achievement Idea

by Charlie Plaine, Equilibrium Designer

24th December 2018

Dear Rogue,

I hope this letter finds you and your family in good health, and that you are ready to celebrate Christmas in style. I'd like to make a suggestion to you for a new deck building achievement for First Edition. In short, I think it would be a lot of fun to have an achievement or two for building a deck that features almost all female personnel. It's certainly not an optimal way to build a deck, but there are some cool component pieces for it. Besides, a big part of the original idea behind achievements was to challenge people to do fun and exciting things, and I think this qualifies.

I mention this now because Equilibrium is coming out this week, and it contains another "girl power" card. Lela was the first host of the Dax symbiont, a famous litigator on Trill and one of the first female councilors in the Trill government. While she never appeared directly on Deep Space 9, she was embodied by Kira in the episode "Facets." After the community made Joran in Sisko's body as part of the Will of the Collective, the Equilibrium design team decided to make Lela in the same vein.

Lela is a new Non-Aligned persona of Kira Nerys, and her skills and classification reflect her government experience. However, her special skill is what will really shine in decks that try for this new suggested achievement. She grants any female personnel present a blanket attribute boost - a literal bit of "girl power" gametext. Aside from Lela, there are other cards in the game such as Life's Simple Pleasures that reward having extra females in play. In the future, I'm sure there will be more such cards to support this achievement suggestion.

I've attached an example of a deck to this letter to illustrate the type of deck that one might build in support of this new achievement. It's not complete, so it offers lots of customization options. Since Lela is a [DS9] personnel, I made this a deck using Reshape the Quadrant. I stumbled upon Comfort Women, which turns all [Baj] females into [Car] personnel, and decided to make this a [Car] [DS9] I Miss This Office deck. It's good synergy, because Comfort Women also puts Bajoran females "Terok Nor" in their lore, making them all free to play aboard Terok Nor. The deck uses some nice Cardassian tricks, including Dominion War Efforts to grab support personnel each turn and A Better Alternative to draw more cards.

You'll notice the deck isn't 100% female, because it includes Morn. Morn is very valuable, since you can download him with Cargo Bay and then park him at Quark's Bar to draw an extra card each turn. I think Morn is above gender concerns, having love for his drink far more than for traditional gender roles. Besides, I think Morn is absolutely a feminist and would fully support the ladies going out and doing all the work.

All in all, I think some new achievements for all-female and/or mostly-female decks would be welcome by the community. We already have achievements for using gender-related dilemmas - Shore Leave and Parallel Romance - so making some to reward deck building is a natural addition. But no matter what you decide, I hope you and everyone else in the community will enjoy Lela and all the other new cards in Equilibrium, releasing this Friday.
