First Among First Edition

by Jeremy Commandeur, First Edition Director

22nd October 2008

Howdy,

Here is a short summary of the 2008 Star Trek CCG First Edition Championship at GenCon.

Eight players showed up for the grand event, six of them voluntarily playing Standard format decks.

I was offering a lot of extra prizes for people playing Standard and the incentive was well received. In general, everybody who played Standard had a pretty good time with it and had no real complaints.

We played three rounds and had a clear winner at the end of the third round. Michael van Breemen emerged victorious with his Standard format Hirogen mission solver (it was set in the Delta Quadrant and was not based on battle).

Three of the decks were based in the Alpha Quadrant: two Starfleet decks and one Federation (Open format). The other five decks were all based in the Delta Quadrant with one Hirogen deck, one Hirogen Hologram deck (Open format), a Vidiian/Kazon deck, a Kazon/Hirogen deck and one Maquis deck that was very interesting.

Over the course of three rounds, there was plenty of interaction going on... lots of battle, some Organ Harvesting, mission stealing and more. We even had one game end in a true tie.

Stephen Lee almost made a last-minute comeback to win his second game, but wound up losing because he scored 60 points that turn and was crippled by Jordan's In the Zone. Despite the harsh loss from In the Zone, Stephen finished in second place.

Will Hoskin managed to fail "God" four times in three games by red shirting into it. It was pretty hilarious, and he spent a lot of his games waiting around to get another ship staffed and out to his stranded heathens. Will still managed to win two of his games for a 4th place finish.

Ferengi Bug and Founder Secret were also very popular dilemmas, as I saw a lot of face-up hands on the table, and heard people counting their Strength to make sure it reached 70.

We even had an 'old school' First Edition player show up with a deck that consisted of mostly Premiere and was based on Red Alert. Ah, those were the days. Stephen Lee generously donated his prize to our old school guest, providing him with more deck-building options for next year.
