Weekly 1E Roundup - 30 OCTOBER 2019

by Charlie Plaine, Director of First Edition

30th October 2019

Gowron of Borg

Welcome to the Weekly 1E Roundup, a weekly column looking back at the past week in the world of First Edition as well as a preview of the week ahead. If you've got an event coming up and you'd like to be featured in this column, feel free to contact me at cplaine@gmail.com or on the forums via PM to MidnightLich.

The Big News

The biggest topic of discussion, continuing on from last week, is the nature of battle Borg decks. Last week we talked to Jeremy Huth (9of24) who won Masters of the Universe II with such a deck, and Kris Sonsteby (LORE) won North American Continentals with a similar deck. Forum user Spectre9 started the discussion I linked, worried about the deck being nigh-unbeatable. Several top players have suggested ways to address the problems, but the discussion is ongoing. The Department of First Edition will be keeping an eye on this deck, and others like it, but we encourage you to continue talking about strategies and options.

This Day in Trek

Today would have been the 96th birday of actor William J. Campbell, who was infamous in Star Trek circles for the characters of Trelane and Koloth. Both came from the original series, with Trelane being a Q-like trickster from "The Squire of Gothos" and Koloth facing off against Kirk in "The Trouble With Tribbles." Campbell would reprise the character of Koloth on Deep Space 9, wearing the full Klingon makeup at age 70. Campbell left this world for the next in April 2011, but he will live on in our memories.

Tournament Reports

Captain Koloth

We saw two tournaments take place this past weekend, both in the midwestern United States. On Saturday, four (4) players met in Roseville, Minnesota for an OTF Complete Constructed tournament. Kris, the tournament director, fought of illness and won the day with a familiar [TNG] [Rom] deck called Since the Last Games... Something is Different. Second place was taken by Perdidit In Spatio Ingeniis Excellentissima, a Bajoran/Federation deck piloted by Robert Petersen (Hobie). Jason Tang (Pants o.t. Tal Shiar) and Justin Kaufman (CrimsonRavage) rounded out the day, playing Infiltration and V'Shar Vulcans respectively. Jason also wrote a tournament report, in which he describes an epic game against Robert. Solid tournament, with four decks to look at - well done!

Meanwhile, on Sunday in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, Brian S (JeBuS) met up with Brian Leonard (MrVorlon) and Eric Bieche (biecheer) to try out the Cube Draft. Sadly, there aren't any deck lists posted yet, but Brian S. wrote a tournament report outline his games. In any case, it sounds like the Brians and Eric had fun, and they will make revisions to make things even better next time.

That was all for official tournaments, but I suspect more of you are out there playing 1E than I know about. We'd love to cover casual games too! If you'd like to have your 1E get together covered in this column, let me know! You can find my contact information at the bottom of every column, and you're welcome to email me, PM me, or just post on the forums.

Tournament Previews

This weekend is First Weekend, First Edition and while there aren't any official tournaments scheduled, I know at least some of you will be getting together to play Trek. In fact, I got the following promo from SuddenKapala to share:

Back in the day, my gaming companion ias (he's Bolian) got acquainted with the game through his brother. Now, during next FWFE, ias and I will be bringing him back into the fold! As is commonplace with us (going-on-)mid-lifers, there's business IRL to attend and thus little room for play, hence this re-introduction has been some time in the making. But brother-dear has been enthusiastic ever since ias and I started meeting over spacelines, so I hold high hopes that this may be the spark that eventually ignites into some New Bajor tourneys. Unless our location gets gobbled up by a black hole, we'll be #showingyouourspacelines!

That sounds awesome! And by playing this coming weekend and posting either on Social Media or this website with the hashtag #showusyourspaceline, you'll be entered to win one of the amazing new borderless, full-art promo foils.

But if we're having a quiet weekend this weekend, next weekend will be jam packed with two (2) major tournaments on the Road to Worlds 2020. First, will be the 2019 Australian Continental Championship, an OTF Complete Constructed tournament in Burwood. Hosted by Kieren (Honest), players will battle across three rounds of swiss. Steve Hartmann (chompers) and Peter Hill (leonardmccoy) are both preregistered; Steve hasn't played since last October, and Peter hasn't played since June. I doubt being rusty will keep them from having fun, and I sincerly hope at least one more player turns up.

Meanwhile, also on Sunday the 10th, Space Coast Trek Masters in West Melborne, Florida will kick off. Host Daniel Matteson (OKCoyote) has put together an amazing prize table and is hosting events all weekend. Aside from himself, powerhouse player Michael Van Breemen (The Ninja Scot) is preregistered and will be an obvious favorite. Maggie Geppert (jadziadax8) will also be attending and playing, and she's smart and someone to watch. No doubt others will be joining them, as it looks to be a wild event.

If you have upcoming events, get togethers, or anything else scheduled that's 1E related, let me know. I'd love to feature you and your friends in this column.

Short Takes (In Other News)

The Time Capsule

Last year, we released the Enterprise Collection Remastered, which has recently been officially matched to the originals as errata. This was a project to provide modern, rules-accurate, and high resolution versions of the last official 1E product. My announcement article last year included a deck that used every card in the file. Have a look!
