Beginner Deck: Klingon

by Maggie Geppert, Executive Officer

21st February 2020

"Glory to you, and your house!" This deck is designed to overwhelm your opponent with the speed of the Klingon mission solving. It features four missions requiring Strength or Integrity, which these Klingons have in abundance. Provoke Interstellar Incident will often be the first mission you want to attempt, as going Space first is usually the safest bet. Follow that up with the subjugation of a planet (Brute Force) and then enslaving the population thereof (Cardassia IV, Rescue Prisoners).

The Interrupts in this deck are designed to help your Klingons push through your opponent’s dilemma piles; the strength of Klingon interrupts represents their aggressive nature. The Promise can help you gain needed skills while you face a dilemma. Relentless can help you keep one of your Klingons from being stopped by a dilemma. Bridge Officer’s Test is very useful when all of your personnel are about to be stopped. Just watch out for the sacrifice you must make to use it.

The dilemma pile, while largely identical to other beginner dilemma piles, contains one dilemma that is specific to this deck. An Issue of Trust is one of the commonly used filter dilemmas. An away team needs at least one personnel with Treachery or Honor to get past it. After that, all personnel with either of those skills is stopped, except for one. This dilemma tends to work quite well against [TNG], [Kli], and [Baj] decks (due to their high levels of Honor) or [Rom] and [Car] decks (due to their Treachery). If you take this deck to a tournament be wary that some of these affiliations can sneak around this dilemma, even Klingons!

Once you're comfortable with this deck, you might want to personalize it. This deck is loosely based off of any of Kris Sonsteby’s KRiS (Klingon Riker Sword) decks. Kris likes to use personnel from the past ( [Pa] ) because they get discounts when they are played.

The Sword of Kahless
-This Artifact equipment can help boost your Klingons’ Strength at the expense of some of their Integrity. You will need to complete a mission requiring Acquisition, Anthropology or Archaeology in order to play it. I recommend swapping out one of the space missions for Kavis Alpha, Research Binary Star if you want to use the Sword.

Battle Your Way to Victory
- This deck contains one card that allows you start an engagement, BaH! If you feel like starting more engagements with your opponent, you may want to consider adding more copies of this or A Chance for Glory to score points. You can swap out one of your space missions for Delta Pavonis, Secure Expansion, which will put cards under itself whenever you win an engagement. Kerla, Military Advisor and Ja’Chuq also have similar functions and can help you push through your missions even faster. Just watch out, because when you fight, you’re not doing missions, which will slow you down.

General Use Cards
- Some cards can just go in any deck - and often do because they're so useful. You have plenty of ways to get extra resources in your deck, but an extra counter per turn from Surprise Party wouldn't go amiss. And once you've played a few games, you'll see how the reboot from Unexpected Difficulties can be game-changing. Alvera Tree Ritual is subtler - you basically play it for free, and not only does it protect you from any dilemma pile manipulation, but it can also be used offensively. If you keep track of which dilemmas you don't use, you can proactively use the Ritual to shuffle your dilemma pile at opportune times.
