Promo-a-Week Project

by Charlie Plaine, Director of First Edition

24th July 2020

Welcome to a brand new program for First Edition: Promo-a-Week! As you might infer from the name, we'll be releasing a brand new virtual promo each week for the next eighteen weeks (or so), once per week. These are beautiful new, high-resolution, alternate image versions of existing cards that we think you guys will really enjoy. You can check out the first in the series, Medical Tricorder, in an accompanying article also posted today.

The idea behind the Promo-a-Week Project came from a conversation with Jason Robinette (JasonRed3), who recently returned to us after an extended break. As part of his return, he'd been reconnecting with other old players including Seth Claybrook, another volunteer from the early days of The Continuing Committee. Seth told Jason, who told me, that he loved coming to the site to see what was new even though he didn't get to play much. But we put up new cards so infrequently, he didn't have a reason to come more often. Seth suggested that we release one new card a week, once a week, to encourage him - and others like him - to visit us more regularly.

We thought that was a great idea with a lot of potential, but it would be a big, ongoing commitment. Rather than try and constantly release cards, the Department of First Edition settled on a smaller program to start: a smaller set of alternate-image promos, released weekly. We ended up with seventeen (17) cards, including both border-colors of a dual-affiliation personnel for a total of eighteen (18) "slots." This smaller program lets us release some cool, high-resolution versions of cards that need them as well as produce more, regular content. If the program is successful and well-received, it is something we can bring back in the future. And the possibilities are endless: we can do new cards mixed in with reprints, and more. So if you like - or dislike - this program, make sure to let us know.

Here's how it will work: every Friday, except when a new expansion is being released for any game, you'll get a new promo. These will be high resolution and printable right away - no watermarks - and because they aren't new cards, they will immediately be legal in all decks in all formats where the original card is legal. Once all of the promos are released, we'll make a PDF file available will all of them together, just like we do for our tournament promo series.

We hope that you'll enjoy this new program, and getting to see the nice new cards our Art, Creative, Proofreading, and Rules teams have worked so hard putting together for you. And just to whet your appetite even more, here's a list of clues to the other sixteen (16) cards you'll seen in the coming months - not counting Medical Tricorder, of course! While each clue in this list maps to one of the cards, they aren't in any particular order.
