Promo-a-Week: Relocate Settlers

by Cristoffer Wiker, First Edition Designer

21st December 2020

Relocate Settlers

Today we bring you the seventeenth and final promo of the 2020 Promo-a-Week project: Relocate Settlers. This Bajor Region mission originally appeared in Deep Space 9. In fact, regions were not a thing until the release of Deep Space 9 (though they would be added to earlier missions with errata later.) But in DS9, we got to see the Bajor Region, along with 3 other ones: Cardassia, Badlands, and the DMZ.

So, what’s the deal with regions then? Well, they seeded differently all of a sudden. You got to go back and insert missions into the already seeded spaceline, breaking up a well-planned strategy by your opponent and give yourself closer access to your missions. There were also cards that keyed off of regions, like the Bajoran Interceptor that gains a RANGE bonus while in a region. There would be more like this along the way. Other cards like Bajoran Wormhole (a Doorway that creates a Bajor Region if there isn't one) work similarly.

Turning back to look at Relocate Settlers, it's the only mission in First Edition with a SPAN 1 - add this to the fact it's in a region, and it’s a really easy mission to reach. (Fun fact: there's only one mission with a SPAN 0, and it's a weird one: Q's Planet.) Relocate Settlers only has a [BAJ] affiliation icon on it, so even if Open where your missions can be stolen, it's a very easy mission to defend. And the mission is worth just 30 points, so it's unlikely to be duplicated since players prioritize 35 point missions.

The requirements for this planet mission are not difficult, as Bajorans have access to SECURITY, V.I.P., Diplomacy, and Treachery without a problem. If you're willing to limit yourselves to just [Baj] cards, then an Alliance for Global Unity deck makes it easy to find Treachery. But then again, you can solve this with only Kira Nerys. If you want to play it safe, you can have her wait back on the ship or even back on a nearby Deep Space 9 until you're ready to solve.

Here are some other combo you can try out with this new, gorgeous AI of Relocate Settlers:

And that's all for the 2020 Promo-a-Week project! We hope that you've enjoyed all of these high resolution alternate images for some of our favorite First Edition cards. We want to wish everyone a happy Winter Holiday season, and give you a small gift: the Promo-a-Week project will continue in 2021! Stay safe, and stay tuned for more details.
