Introducing the Second Edition Art Team

by Michael Shea, Second Edition Art Manager

13th December 2020

I'd like to begin first by thanking Johnny Holeva for all of his contributions and hard work for Second edition over the years. Best of luck to you in First edition, sir! I'd also like to thank Brian Scaeflin, Charlie Plaine, and Tjark Ott for the cooperation, collaboration, and support during this transition process. Please believe me when i say this would not have been possible without their help and good efforts. Finally, I'd like to thank every volunteer I've worked with in Art. Now that First edition and second edition duties are no longer combined, if any of you is ever interested in joining our team, please don't hesitate to let me know.

In light of the recent split of the artistic aspect of the production process between First Edition/Tribbles and Second Edition, a formal Second Edition Art Team has been created under the authority of the Second Edition Director Tjark Ott. I would like to introduce this new team to everyone and explain to you all a little bit about how Second Edition Art duties will be carried out going forward.

Second edition Art Team Manager will be Michael Shea. Michael has been an Art Team volunteer since Star Trek 50. Michael will be responsible, when needed, for making overall editorial decisions regarding Second Edition art. He will also be responsible for creating and documenting formal procedures to build institutional memory, as well ensuring that all relevant 2e Art resources are housed in a location accessible by key staff members in case of another managerial transition. Michael will act as the liaison between the Second Edition Art Team and other departments.

Second Edition Lead Artist will be Marc Wagner. Marc has been involved in the creation of pack and cover art for Second Edition since The Omega Directive and has been an active content creator on the dream card forums in The Dojo . Going forward, Marc will supervise the creation of pack and cover art and, in collaboration with Michael, help create new Second Edition art content when needed. Marc will also be Michael’s executive officer and take over Art Manager duties in case of Michael’s absence or departure.

The Second edition Art Team will consist of Marc and Michael as well the volunteers named in the following paragraph. All previous Art volunteers who had worked on recent Second Edition sets were invited to continue doing so. I’m delighted to write that both Christopher Knight and Martin Felber have both chosen to stay on after the split. Their experience and familiarity with the process of finding, pulling, and editing suitable images will be a tremendous asset. I am also pleased to announce that David Drummond, Paul Karels, and Romana Aoko, each of whom have all already been working unofficially on pack art and cover sheet art and who are also active dream card content creators on The Dojo and elsewhere, will be officially joining our team. All Second edition Art Team members will be involved in the collaborative process of selecting and pulling potential images to be used on Second Edition cards.

We’re excited about the art prospects for Second Edition, and we’ve already got what we hope are some fun and exciting things in store. Again, if you are a former Art volunteer and you are interested in joining the Second Edition Art Team, or if you’ve always wanted to volunteer but haven’t yet and would like to, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Here’s to a bright 2021!
