North American Continental Championships 2022 Announcement

by Kris Sonsteby, Director of Organized Play

1st May 2022

The Continuing Committee and the local "Frozen Chosen" of the greater Minnesota player base are proud to announce that the 2022 North American Continental Championships for all three games - First Edition, Second Edition, and Tribbles - will take place the weekend of July 23rd and 24th at GameZenter f.k.a. Fantasy Flight Event Center in Roseville, Minnesota. The greater Twin Cities area has played host to numerous high level events over the years, including but not limited to Nationals: West in 2012, Trek Masters in 2018, and the Continental Championships in both 2014 & 2017, respectively.

At the time of this writing, only the main events have been entered into the tournament system although side events such as the Jaeger Cube Draft (2E) and the Tang Warp Speed Cube Draft (1E) are likely to get booked in the coming weeks. We are also planning to host standard constructed side events to accommodate our First Edition and Second Edition specialists. With that said, here is your main event schedule for the 2022 North American Continental Championships:

Friday, July 22nd

Are you in town early and want to connect with the local crew? Are you a Twin Cites resident looking for an excuse to cut out of work early? Come on down to GameZenter any time after 6 p.m. for dinner and casual gaming with your weekend adversaries and their spouses, their friends, and their spouse's friends! Try out Wingspan, Seven Wonders, Ticket to Ride, and / or several of the other crowd favorites. Perhaps you will even be able to best Nat "The Beast from the East" Kirton in a game of Set!

Saturday, July 23rd

Bright and early Saturday morning we will formally kick off the championship weekend with First Edition Continentals. This tournament will be five rounds of standard constructed play using the OTF rules. Players will have the option of cashing in an Earned Bye awarded from the Regional Championships that have transpired over the past two years or forgoing sitting out Round 1 and jumping right into the action. Who will survive the car wreck that is a Five Round 1E event to claim gold in our first of three championships to be awarded? Tune in to find out!

After a short dinner break, we will reconvene for the Tribbles Continentals starting around 6:30 p.m. with the preliminary heats. The prelim tournaments will be five rounds with the table winners and other highest scores advancing to the finals. Be sure to check Daniel "The Gunslinger" Matteson's post linked above to see if you have earned yourself a 100,000 Tribbles Headstart, as those few extra points could make all the difference! You sure talk a big game, but do you have the furry balls to back it up?

Sunday, July 24th

Our final day of competition will be a showcase of the immortals, as the Second Edition Continentals take center stage. This tournament will also be five rounds of constructed play using the standard rules. Similar to Saturday, players will have the option of cashing in an Earned Bye awarded from the Regional Championships that have happened over the past two years or forgoing sitting out Round 1 and diving right into the shark tank. Will a foreign invader take the title home, or will it be hoisted by a member of the Land of 10,000 Champions? Inquiring minds want to know!

As Regional season kicks into high gear over the next few months, be sure to check both the front page and the Continental Championships update thread for additional information regarding nearby hotels, restaurants, side event schedules, and more. On behalf of the entire "Frozen Chosen" we cannot wait to see you this July for the North American Continental as we celebrate our three great games. You... gotta... be... THERE!
