The Motion Pictures Remastered: Rules Supplement

by James Heaney, Rules Manager (1E)

24th June 2022

Happy release day! After a lot of elbow grease from Rules, Art, and Creative, The Motion Pictures: Remastered is released today, and it is legal immediately upon release.

By the time you read this article, the full Rules Supplement should be on the homepage under "Recent Rulings."

Observe Ritual

This is a very simple rules supplement. Decipher probably would not have issued a formal supplement for this at all, but just covered it in the following month's CRDs. We are deleting or shortening about a dozen Glossary entries, since today's errata renders them irrelevant. Charlie already talked about my favorite extremely minor rules win in the set: The Whale Probe now says "far end of spaceline" instead of "long end of spaceline," which ends our need to support both phrases in the rules. The whole supplement is like that.

With one exception.

The Planet Vulcan Is The Vulcan Homeworld

When Observe Ritual came out in the original The Motion Pictures, it was the first representation of Planet Vulcan in the game, and the mission's lore even called it the "home planet" of the Vulcans. Players asked: does that lore make Vulcan a homeworld? Decipher answered, "No. Vulcan is not a homeworld because Vulcan is not an affiliation. Only affiliations have homeworlds."

But Vulcan is an affiliation now!

The Rules Committee had intended to do something about Observe Ritual when Live Long And Prosper came out several years ago, but we didn't get it done in time. As a result, we've had a strange situation on Vulcan for the past few years: one version of Vulcan was considered a homeworld, but the other version, Deliver Ancient Artifact, was not. (If either player played the homeworld version, the non-homeworld version automatically became the homeworld anyway, which is confusing.) I wrote more about the history of this rules tangle on the forums, if you're interested.

Today, we've clarified the situation: since Vulcan is an affiliation now, the Planet Vulcan, identified on Observe Ritual as the homeworld of the Vulcan affiliation, is now legally the Vulcan homeworld. We've even issued errata to the card, changing the unusual term "home planet" to the more customary "homeworld" to make this crystal clear.

Vulcan players take note! Now you can use Strategema AND use Observe Ritual's special Vulcan reporting text! Remember, too, that, since Observe Ritual is not a facility, site, or time location, this is special reporting, not subject to quadrant restrictions! Tuvok and Commander T'Pol can report to Vulcan's surface just as easily as Spock can!

Thanks for reading! Go enjoy the pretty pretty new pictures, minor touchups in wording, complain about anything you don't like, and, above all, remember: The Star Trek CCG Adventure Is Just Beginning!
